Dear Jery, May I comment on two items in Allen Togwell’s report in the last issue of Call Sign? Firstly, he suggests that drivers should try sitting in their cabs an hour or so earlier than they start in order to hear what work is being called. Can I say, Allen, in respect of the shift I work - I start at 4am- the radio is quiet for periods of 10 –20 minutes without a job being called. In fact, a couple of weeks ago I signed on and 40 minutes later the despatcher queried whether he had a cab to cover a job in the west. Since the BBC work, such as it was, was handed over to other circuits, the amount of work coming into the society between the hours of, say 3.30 am to 6.30am has diminished by at least 50% as compared with the same period 12 - 18 months ago, despite this now being the busy work season. Just driving around to see deserted streets and a silent radio will not make drivers eager to start earlier. Incidentally it would be nice to know if any of the 80 new accounts opened last month are all 9 - 5 callers in the city and west end as we seem to be very timid about developing new business in any other parts of London. Secondly in the last paragraph of his report Allen asks subscribers to display Dial-a-Cab logos on their cab doors. I have been trying since March to get these for my new cab along with seat adverts and telephone numbers stickers. All these advertising items have been out of stock to my knowledge since March. If the society does not have them available, how can we advertise? Yours sincerely, R.M Sorene (A53) _______________________________________ |
