Pic right: Bill (L) and Gerry (R) with their Metro at Disneyland Paris

It isn't often that someone stops you and asks how much you'd charge to Paris, but that's exactly what a solicitor asked Bill Tyzack when he hailed his cab. Bill's answer was easy: "Hire me and see!"
That brief conversation developed into a fund raising event for the Solicitors Benevolent Association and the London Taxi Drivers Fund for Underprivileged Children.
The Fund's Gerry Dunn (S84)and Bill Tyzack (C6) together with

"Traps" Job to Paris

John Griffin from SBA set the ball rolling. A competition was arranged to guess the amount on the meter from the Law Society in Chancery Lane to Disneyland in Paris with 68,000 leaflets being distributed to every solicitor in England!
Metrocab Hooper UK lent them a new cab, Lucas fitted the meter, Dial-a-cab sponsored the drivers and the LTDA sponsored one of the major prizes A promise of £1000 to the funds Xmas party was given by AON insurance co.
At 05.30 am on the 28h October, the cab was ready for to go. Gerry and Bill were to share the driving and the passenger would be Jennifer Gaze, President of the Hampshire Inc. Law Society. The meter was
set and sealed by a solicitor while Bill's other half, Grace, provided sandwiches, flasks of hot coffee and encouragement.
After driving off Le Shuttle, the DaC pair drove straight to Paris. Following their arrival at Disneyland Paris, the meter was put on stop and the amount was recorded. You can't be too careful with up to a thousand solicitors around watching your every move!
At the hotel, the Fund's photo display was put up with many of the delegates remarking on the good work that the London taxi trade does for handicapped children and a collection was made. Together with sponsorship, they made nearly £2000 for the Fund's Xmas party.
Tired, but satisfied with their efforts, the DaC twosome returned to London knowing that they had bridged a gap between the two professional trades. Of yes, how much was on the meter? It was £683 40 for your future reference! After all, you never know!
It's been said before, but it's worth saying again and it is something the Fund are very proud of, their expenses are only five percent unlike many other charities that can spend up to fifty percent of money raised.
Through Call Sign, the Fund would like to thank Paul Fiori of Metrocab Hoopers, Dial-a-Cab Chairman Brian Rice, Pam, of Lucas Meters and Bob Oddy of the LTDA.

NUMBER CHANGE FROM APRIL 22nd

Call Sign has had several requests for an explanation as to how the new London telephone numbers work. It's fairly simple...

There used to be two different codes for the London area. You either had 0171 or 0181. Now there is just one. Wherever you live in London, you will now have the code of 020. The only difference is that if you previously had an 0171 number, you add 7 to the beginning of your usual seven digit number. If you had an 0181 number, you add 8 in front of your seven digit number. So in effect, your seven digit phone number will become an 8 digit number and all you need remember is that the London code is 020.
So if you previously had the telephone number of 0171 253 5000, the 0171 bit would vanish and be replaced by 020. Then you would put a 7 in front of the 253 5000 section. So your new number would be 020 7253 5000.
If your number was previously 0181 253 5000, you would drop the 0181 for 020, then take the 8 and place it in front of your usual seven digits so that your number becomes 020 8253 5000.
So, as of April 22nd 2000, if the former 0171 number wanted to dial the 0181 number, he or she would dial 8253 5000 and if the 0181 number wanted to dial the 0171 number, the new number would be 7253 5000. If your Aunty Mary in Leeds wants to phone you, she would just put 020 in front of the eight digit number.
So far as stationery is concerned, the telephone companies are hoping to latch on to the American system where you would have your number printed as: (020) 7253 5000 or (020) 8253 5000.
The changeover date is April 22nd 2000 and although both sets of numbers are currently working in tandem, should you use the new system, then until April 22nd, you will have to use the code as well ie (020) 7253 5000 or (020) 8253 5000.

MICHAEL O'BRIEN SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETES NEW YORK MARATHON

Supporting the charity for handicapped children, Whizz-Kidz, Michael O'Brien (V43) successfully completed the New York Marathon around the streets of the 'Big Apple' on Sunday November 7th.

He had arrived in New York several days earlier and acclimatised by staying with an aunt who fed him with a steady stream of pasta and meat balls - everything a runner requires!
With mild weather, Michael took a cab to the start and wasn't too impressed:
"The cabs are so small" he told Call Sign "and the driver had left his take away lunch by my feet in the front seat! It smelt quite considerably! It makes you appreciate the London taxi set-up."
And the race itself? " It was fantastic" said Michael. "The crowds were ecstatic and they really pulled me through. I was very pleased with my time of 3 hours 46 minutes. I would really like to thank Dial-a-Cab for their great response to my appeal. Thank you so much and keep up the good work..."
