The staff at Brunswick House are a very important part of the Dial a Cab organisation. In fact, without them there wouldn't be an organisation! So Call Sign aims to make this their magazine too. In each issue, we'll introduce some of the people who work for Dial a Cab yet have never driven a cab in their lives....

WHO’S WHO

Michelle Bland

MICHELLE BLAND
Michelle is 26 and has been with Dial a Cab for four years. She is a Customer Service Rep in the Call Centre with special responsibility for regular bookings - specifically for the Westminster ‘Special Needs’ account. Asked about her hobbies and disregarding the after- work jaunts to the local boozer, Michelle enjoys listening to music and - as she puts it - to chill out. But she also has an unusual hobby - glass painting. Although only recently introduced to it, Michelle is prepared to try

anything from glass bottles to windows. She also foresees a time when there may be some money in it - any glass painting agents out there!
In response to a Who’s Who request to paint our glass bottomed boat, Michelle claims that you need to have more experience when doing bottoms!
Her ambitions are to be rich and eight and a half stones! In the meantime, until the lottery cheque arrives, she is very happy at Dial-a-Cab and enjoys the camaraderie…

ANN HUGHES
There can’t be many long-term drivers who don’t know Ann. She was a night-shift supervisor for over nineteen years starting at Shirland Road in 1977, until ill-health forced her to give it up and move to the earlier evening-shift. She is now a Customer Service Rep (okay Ann, so you’re a Call Taker!!). And, in fact, on July 22nd Ann celebrates her twentieth completed year with Dial-a-Cab.

Anne Hughes

Health problems in the past curtailed any possibility of water skiing or sky diving, but Ann enjoys the more leisurely pursuits of drawing and reading. She is also a big video buff and enjoys relaxing to one of the latest releases.
While being as efficient at her position as you would expect, she admits that she misses the old voice system at times because "…you got to know far more drivers that you do now. Names were far more important then".
Ann loves being at Dial-a-Cab and can’t imagine ever being anywhere else.

Dial-a-Cab Golf

For a sensational third consecutive year, the golfers of Dial-a-Cab have have won the prestigious Joint Radio Taxi Association (JRTA) Golf Cup.  Held at the beautiful Nazeing Golf Club on Monday 22nd June, Dial-a-Cab won the competition by five points from Compuetr Cab, Data Cab third and Radio Taxis fourth.
The Office Shield - presented to the best two players from the office departments of each competing circuit.  This was won by Dial-a-Cab's Allen Togwell and Keith Cain.  The longest drive was won by a Datacab driver while the Nearest the Pin prize was taken by a representative of Compuetr Cab.  The winner of the individual Stapleford Competition was also a Com Cab driver.
Following the victory, Dial-a-Cab Team Captain Peter Boxall (S44) told Call Sign:
"The team were really up for it today and deserved to win.  The guys showed a lot of determination.  It really was a brilliant team performance."
Friday the 5th June saw twenty four DaC drivers playing for the honour of representing the Society in the fourth annual Joint Radio Taxi Association Cup. The venue was the Abridge Golf Club where conditions were perfect, the course looked superb and the club made us extremely welcome. The winner of the day was Bob Horth V37 with 40 points. The longest drive was also won by Bob Horth and nearest the pin was won by Jim Crayford. The other drivers who made the team are: P Boxall S44, J Dacey V56, D Hope R52, G Pamphilon R78, L Shurlin R13, L Lacome D68, J Crawford T25, D Shepherd P21, C Stanley B61, D Spencer V89 and J Douglas V38.
On Wednesday 10th June at Moor Park Golf Club, the semi-final and final of the Driver’s Knockout Golf competition took place  . Jim Cunningham, Duncan Hope, Martyn Madden and Ron Vosper were the players who made it through to the last four.
Despite the frequent heavy showers, the afternoon was set up for a thrilling final. Both Jim and Martyn were playing some terrific shots and were neck and neck up to the eighth hole where Martyn Madden made a rare mistake with a poor chip from off the edge of the green. From this point on, Jim Cunningham put pressure on Martyn to come and get him and despite a tremendous effort, Martyn could not recapture his mornings performance. So this year’s Dial a Cab Knockout winner is Jim Cunningham (K27).
