Europe's premier golf
venue - the DeVere Belfry - is to host
the opening round of a new UK Super 12
amateur championship that will only open
to golfers with a 12-plus handicap.
The Belfry, home to four Ryder Cup matches in 2005, will welcome up
to 160 amateurs for the first heat in
April, giving the competition a massive
boost and the ultimate endorsement!
It will be followed by an around-Britain competition that will see
2000 golfers battle for 200 places in
the Algarve in November with The Belfry
possibly also hosting the closing UK
heat.
The new championship was only launched in December, but already
clubs across England and Scotland are
signing up to heats as golfers from all
over the UK join in, looking for a
chance to be crowned UK champion.
Dial-a-Cab drivers are welcome provided your handicap is 12 or
over. Entry fee is £100.
Organisers and main sponsors, URO Competitions,
say the competition, involving ladies
and gentlemen with 12-plus handicaps
will give a boost to clubs all over
Britain as each heat will be a high
profile event designed to attract more
local golfers as members. There will be
separate ladies and gents competitions
and golfers do not have to be a club
member, which opens the competition up
to everyone.
MD Peter Fisher told Call Sign: "Having The Belfry on board is a
measure of confidence in this new
competition as a way of |

involving amateurs across the
UK, regardless of whether they are
members of a club. The 2000 or more
entrants will have a ball with this
competition and the 200 finalists will
get to play on three fine courses in
Portugal, while staying at four-star
hotels at our expense."
The DeVere Belfry says it jumped at the opportunity to host the
competition with DeVere Belfry golf
sales manager, Amy Yeates telling us:
"This is a competition which is giving
the perceived lowly amateur a chance to
really shine and we are seriously
looking at hosting both the opening and
closing heats, because we believe this
is a fine opportunity for Britain's
amateurs. It will be a big boost for
British golf."
Part of the £100 + VAT entrance fee will go to the charity
Harvest Help, which helps African
people to help themselves and every
entrant will be entitled to three rounds
of golf.
Finalists will play their additional games in Portugal as part of
the competition, while non-qualifiers
will get a choice of designated courses
in their area. If you reach the final,
you will
|
have to pay for your own
flight to the Algarve, everything else
will be paid for.
The four-day final will be rounded off with a glittering ball for
1000 guests with a top golfer as guest
speaker, who will also present the
prizes and specially commissioned glass
trophy.
