He's
on his travels again! On his last major journey,
Dial-a-Cab’s Tony Arnold (F03) drove his TXII on
the momentous trip from Beijing, China, all the way to
London’s Trafalgar Square! That trip was filmed for
Chinese television and was designed to help publicise the
forthcoming 2008 Beijing Olympics. Now Tony is off again – this time to the African continent - and told Call Sign in his usual forthright manner: "I was requested by the very highest authority - out of 20,000 London taxi drivers, 48,562 PH drivers and 128,000 unlicensed scumbags, to travel to Nigeria in West Africa and use my communication skills in training would-be Taxi drivers how to carry out a similar first class service to that which we continue to provide on a daily basis in our wonderful capital city of London. Mr Livingstone, please take note of how good other countries see us!" Tony is based is Abuja City and there until early May. Abuja City is located in the hot interior of West Africa and is Nigeria’s capital city. It was created to give Nigerians an ethnically neutral centre that is accessible to all regions of Nigeria. Abuja is a bicultural mix of |

Muslim,
which has the majority, and Christian. The Federal
Government of Nigeria officially moved from Lagos on the
south coast of Nigeria to Abuja in 1991. Tony told us on an amazingly clear phone line that he was being interviewed on Nigerian Central Television about his plans for his Nigerian stay. Those plans revolve around teaching Nigerian cabbies how London Taxi drivers work. "I’m attempting to teach the local cabbies how to communicate better with their passengers, how to drive safely and generally how to be a good taxi driver," said Tony. Amazingly, Tony is teaching them on a TXII! Selling TXIIs to |
Nigeria
is obviously part of the program, but we’d love to see
the Nigerian cabbies after Tony has finished with them! As for Tony, we won’t use the first phrase he mentioned, but he told us that he was sweating part of his anatomy off! Incredibly, his first day in Abuja saw record temperatures – even accounting for the fact that it City is just a stone’s throw from the Equator – hitting an amazing 51C, the equivalent to a rather warmish 123F. How was Tony going to celebrate his first night? "I’m going back to my air-conditioned apartment and sitting in a cold bath!" |
LIZ WINTERBURN TAKES ON "RACE FOR LIFE" | |
Liz
Winterburn, the wife of Dial-a-Cab Network Administrator,
Jonathen, has decided that she is going to run the "Race
For Life" 5k run for Cancer Research on 3 July and is
looking for some sponsorship for this very worthy cause. Liz
has her own page online should you wish to help, or you can
send any donations via Call Sign clearly marked Race for Life
and we’ll happily pass it on. Her page is HERE. Liz told Call Sign: "I have decided to drag my backside kicking and screaming off the sofa and do something useful! My mum lost her battle against cancer last year and my mum-in-law is currently battling cancer, so this is something very close to my heart. Donating through the website is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Cancer Research UK will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you. If you can sponsor me, it really will be greatly appreciated." |
