In November 2002, Call Sign carried a story about Andy Gorman (W77) and his fight against the flab in a BBC TV program! We published a photo of Andy, his arms outstretched showing where his stomach used to be. while on a strict dietary regime to improve his health. Andy continues the story: "Mentorn Films called me about an up-coming TV series and invited me to take part. I had an initial health check as abasis from which to measure my progress and what the medical team told me, was quite frankly, frightening! The initial medical report predicted that in my present state, I was likely to be dead by the age of 52 - and I’m 38 now! Very sobering. Yes, I have tended to eat junk food, eating Big Mac’s quite frequently for convenience and I’m in and out of other food shops all the time. So the fact that my body is beginning to say ‘enough’ wasn’t too surprising I guess. |

reckon anyone who suspects they might benefit from this
medical scrutiny would find it money well spent if it
saves their life. I was deficient in most vitamins, mainly
Vitamin C, from eating an unbalanced diet, so now I watch
closely that I eat healthy foods only. My cholesterol
level is now a satisfactory 5.4. In the program, the
cameras follow me around both at home and on the cab, so I’ve
got no chance of cheating and sneaking the odd cream cake!
But even if I did, I’d be silly to my family and myself

Dial-a-Cab driver Barry Spear (Y16) beat the Camden Council
PCN he had received for exiting Queen Square WC1 via Boswell
Street and not following the blue arrow when coming into
Theobalds Road. Quite possibly even worse, Call Sign has now heard of PCNs being issued by Camden outside the Pearl Restaurant at High Holborn’s Renaissance Hotel at 11.20pm – yes, 11.20 at night! As is Camden’s sneaky way of gaining revenue, they use digital camera technology. Dial-a-Cab had sent six taxis to pick up at Pearls, but because the forecourt was crowded, the taxis waited in the main road. As we are just going to print, we’ve had no time to go into the matter, but hopefully our friends at TAXI - who are also looking at the Boswell Street mess - may enter the fray. It took Call Sign some time to work out what these cabs could possibly have done. There are zigzags outside, but our drivers would know not to wait on them. However, there is a 24hour coach bay there with a sign saying ‘no parking at any time’. |
 No doubt, as there were no coaches there at the time and if we were to hazard a guess, probably none there until the following day, our drivers pulled onto that bay. Overlooking the bay is a Camden camera. The result? Several had £100 PCNs (£50 if paid within etc etc). The cabs were just waiting quietly for their passengers. The question has now to be: Are Camden declaring war on the Licensed Taxi trade? Call Sign can do nothing at this late hour other than to report the matter to you; however, we have decided to remove Camden from our mailing list. Should they still require a copy of this magazine, it will cost them £100 per issue - or £50 if they want a 2-week old issue… |
