LENNY BELL DIES AFTER LONG CANCER BATTLE
|
|
Rainham Cemetery provided a sad, bleak backdrop for the large
crowd who had gone to pay their final respects to Dial-a-Cab
driver Lenny "ding-dong" Bell (L01) who died at the young age of
60. At the March 17 funeral, DaC were represented by a large
influx of drivers and Board member Allan Evans. Len’s wife
Stephanie told Call Sign that she knew there were a lot of our
drivers by the logoed jackets! Len had been fighting the cancer so bravely and even after an ongoing saga of bad news, where he had been told the cancer had spread, he never gave in because Stephanie wouldn’t |
allow
him to. Len and Stephanie had been on holiday but had to return early. Two days later, he was admitted into hospital and never came out. I saw him the day before he was admitted and he still believed that he would one day go back to driving his immaculate Metrocab. His only real concern was that the drugs he was taking had caused him to become bloated. For someone as fastidious as Lenny – he washed his cab every day during better times – that wasn’t something he wanted many to see. My assurances that many cab drivers who weren’t taking those drugs looked fatter, fell on deaf ears. It was Stephanie who |
convinced him that he would be ok. There was no hiding what he had, but the obvious end result was kept inside Steph right till the end and so successfully did she achieve that, Len even convinced me on that last time that he would get through it even if it meant only driving part-time. In June 2003, Len and Stephanie’s daughter Julia gave birth to twins – Mathew and Georgia - and they soon became the love of his life. Len may not see them growing up, but he at least had those months of delight at having them around. Our condolences to all the family. Rest in peace Lenny, we won’t forget you… Alan Fisher |
