Call Sign’s politically incorrect, grumpy old man and former London Mayoral candidate, Chas Kissin (P99J), had even more to grumble about recently when for no apparent reason at the time, he drove into a lamppost and almost wrote off the cab that he and Neville Chapman (P99) share.
Chas was driving the 5-month old TXII home along The Highway at around 1.30am when he suddenly felt clammy and sweaty. His first thought was to pull over "…but the next thing I knew was that Dial-a-Cab drivers were stopping to see if I was ok after I had driven straight into the post! My head hit the windscreen and shattered the glass, but fortunately it didn’t go through it. I would have hated to have to change my Call Sign photo!"

The ambulance arrived on the scene very quickly and he was taken via stretcher to the London Hospital, with DaC drivers trying to assist by seeing if Chas had any messages he wanted passing, but he was in a state of shock and unable to answer clearly.
One driver told overnight dispatcher, Curls Villiers, about the accident and she phoned Chas’ wife Frankie and put a taxi at her disposal.
"It was a really thoughtful thing to do,"
Chas said, "I’m pleased that after receiving news like that in the middle of the night, that she didn’t have to drive in from Essex to the hospital. Fortunately my brother also arrived at the London and Frankie had some company for the return journey."

How was the cab? "Well," said Chas, "one garage said it was a

write-off and another said it would be down to the insurance company as to whether it was repairable or not, but at the very best estimate, the damage looked to be around £25,000!"

So what caused the accident?
"I’ve had several tests at the hospital,"
Chas told us, "including two ECGs and a brain scan. They were all clear, so that took away the thought of a stroke or heart attack. I’ve recently been in   contact with someone who had a virus with similar symptoms, except that the
woman concerned wasn’t driving so it didn’t seem quite as bad. But it looks as though it was a virus – which I suppose is good news as I now seem to be ok except for a few scratches, although I have been told not to drive again for three weeks."

Chas finished by asking us to scotch two rumours. There was no lorry involved and the air ambulance wasn’t called! Chas and Neville are the trade’s longest driver partnership, having bought their first cab in 1974 and renewing it every two years or so ever since…
