18-year-old Debbie Russell has worked as a Call Taker in the
Brunswick House Call Centre for the past four months and tells Call Sign
that she enjoys the cordiality found on DaC’s fourth floor. But Debbie also
has other hopes and plans - in the recording industry. Her singing voice was first noticed at the tender age of five by her school drama teacher. But as she grew older and her voice continued to improve, she couldn’t shake off the shyness that had seemingly always been with her. "Perhaps it was mixing with older girls at secondary school that shook me out of it," Debbie told Call Sign, "but whatever it was, the shyness vanished as quickly as it came and I was suddenly up front and volunteering for everything!" Then at the age of 17 and with her voice still noticeably good, that volunteering side of Debbie came in useful when someone suggested that she should goalong to a singing audition and |

with her
self-confidence and belief in herself, she did. It was whilst at the
audition that a recording executive saw Debbie and two other girls and
suggested that they looked good and if they sounded as good as they looked,
there could be a big future ahead. In fact, so impressed were both Sony and Global Publishing with Debbie’s group that they offered them a recording contract! On their first album, Sony and GP will be writing 50% of the tracks – not something they do for everyone. "I’ve written lots of my own stuff," Debbie went on, "and those tracks will be on the second album although there will be a few on the debut album. Mind you, we still have to find a name for the group!" Debbie has just returned from hospital after having her tonsils removed. Call Sign asked if we could have them pickled in a jar |
