We’ve all been to Roman Way for an upgrade, but what was it? Tom Carter explains…

For the past few months, we have been upgrading your mobile terminals primarily to correct meter-reading problems since Dial-a-Cab is now required by some clients to show the meter fare at arrival time.
At the same time, we have also been installing new software that attempts to correct some problems with the modem software. These problems, which impact the ability of the radio system to handle the data traffic efficiently, became apparent after all the old 7100 terminals were replaced.
The first problem is the inability of the modem software to detect and handle the ‘Channel Busy’

MOBILE TERMINAL UPGRADES

 condition. A radio channel enters
this state when a ‘high water
mark’ is reached and it simply means there are too many terminals on the channel. When
this state is reached, the radio system informs the mobiles and they are supposed to migrate to a different channel. This was not working and the system allowed too many mobiles to attach themselves to a channel, causing that channel to slow down and its performance to degrade. The new mobile software now handles this condition. However, it is not the final solution since this condition needs to be controlled by the modem software itself.
The second problem is the inability of the modem software to properly handle ‘Channel Scanning’. As most of you know, DaC has seven data channels and one voice channel. As mobiles moves around the city, they move from one channel to the next looking for the best signal. The way a mobile finds a new channel is controlled by an embedded list of channels that is called the ‘Channel Scan List’. When the
mobiles were initially installed, they all had the same channel scan list and because ‘Channel Scanning’
was not working, only the first few of the seven channels were consistently considered as a new channel. This caused the majority of the mobiles to lock onto one of the first 3 or 4 channels in the list and caused the ‘Channel Busy’ condition. During the current mobile upgrades, we have been redefining the ‘Channel Scanning List’ based on the normal starting position of the mobile.
While these upgrades have been occurring, the modem supplier has been correcting their modem software. They have fixed the two problems described above and have also uncovered several other problems that would have a negative effect on the radio system. This new modem software is now being installed on all taxis that go to Roman Way. Once all taxis have been upgraded to this new version, any signal problems should all but disappear.

Every issue of Call Sign takes a look back at ODRTS history through the pages of the magazines of the time with a… DIAL-A-CAB FLASHBACK

This month’s Flashback looks at Dial-a-Cab’s move to their current premises from Shirland Road in 1984…

From Call Sign: August / September 1984

SETTLING IN NICELY!
In an exciting atmosphere of organised chaos, ODRTS sadly vacated its old Shirland Road HQ on Saturday 11th August 1984. Ex-Chairman, Peter Fenneymore started our Brunswick Place work transmissions at 12 noon. All went well and our new name of Dial-a-Cab was born at that moment, heralding a new era of ODRTS service to London’s cab riding public.
Our new building, Brunswick House, is one of the most modern yet to be seen in the trade, far outstripping those of our rivals and
from here we hope to place

ourselves in contention as London’s number one circuit again. Our new premises will take ODRTS into the 21st century as an up-to-date, fully equipped radio taxi organisation, giving the public a second-to-none service.
Three Board members have decided to stand down as we move into the new premises. Our thanks to Aubrey Siteman, Jack Taylor – two of the architects of our move from Maida Vale - and Phil Emden, who can be proud of all the work he has put into the planning of Brunswick House. Our thanks to all of them…

DRIVERS COMMENTS ON OUR NEW BUILDING
On 4th and 5th August 1984, Phil Messias and Kenny Burns were on hand to explain the ins and

outs of our new control room. Some comments from drivers…

Fabulous! Leaves Affleck Street and Shirland Road standing… Cyril Barnett (A47)
   *
I was worried about the old phone number but I understand it will run alongside the new one for a year. It’s big with so much room for any future plans we have… Norman Shultz (E66)
   *
Fantastic! What a difference from Shirland Road to here. With an HQ like this, we’ll have a reason to cover all our credit work and be proud of it… Frank Pearce (L83)
   *
It means I’ll be getting aggravation in much more pleasant surroundings… Dennis Samuels (F25 and dispatcher)
   *
It’s like going into another dimension from Victorian to modern times… David Kirby (L03)

Lovely, spacious building, but I’m concerned about parking nearby…Adrian Landau (B69)
