On
a beautiful cold, but sunny November day, Call Sign joined
thousands of tourists as they lined the route of the Lord
Mayor’s Show and welcomed in the new incumbent to the
Mansion House. As usual, the three-mile long parade contained licensed taxis both old and new and a huge variety of floats, acrobatics, fancy dress and military displays. The Lord Mayor's Show has been running for over 800 years with London having its first Lord Mayor in 1189 - albeit he having to suffer the indignity of having no show! The first recorded show occurred in 1215 when we were ruled by Richard of Cornwall! The only occasions that stopped London hosting this magnificent event were the Black Death and the funeral of the Duke of Wellington in 1852. Over the years, the event has grown into a big, colourful procession, featuring bands, floats, state procession, military parade, a fair in Paternoster Square and a firework display on the River Thames. Saturday 13 November was no different… DaC’s Jim Rainbird (T25) – a veteran of the Show - was part of the 2012 Olympic ‘back the bid’ float and told Call Sign that it was amazing just to be part of the parade. While there he met several Olympic celebrities including Olympic boxing Silver medal hero, Amir Khan. "I didn’t argue with him," said Jim, "it was too cold!" |
