Wanna Be A Nerd For The Night!
Last night my two sons and I took part in our first NerdNight session! If you don't know what a NerdNight is, read on, if you do then you may be interested in future sessions.
Basically NerdNights are the meeting of similar-minded souls who like playing network computer games, especially "shoot 'em up" games. Guys that I know have been running these particular NerdNight sessions for over two years and they are becoming evermore popular. The expected turn out for this session was 64 people, all paying a £15 entrance fee for a session that started at 7pm and continued until 6:30am - yes 06:30hrs! Can you believe that???
The actual computer game being played was HalfLife's CounterStrike. This is an excellent graphical game where you form teams of terrorists or anti terrorists who all fight each other. But what was so amazing about this particular NerdNight was that it took place in a terraced house in Ascot, together with a marquee in the garden that was packed with entrants and their computers. By the way, there is no prize for the person killing most combatants, it's purely for the enjoyment of taking part.
   To accommodate so many
Computer Chinchat
people, this guy has totally networked his house to the extent that he has a huge Cisco 5000 Catalyst in the loft with all the network cables being integrated into the walls, together with loads and loads of power sockets. There was even a DJ who travelled down from Yorkshire, but his system wouldn't work due to there being a power drain, (funny that, eh?), so he went home!
Now, the really sad thing about all this is that I suffer from motion sickness, which means I can't spend more than 10-15 minutes playing one of these games before I start puking up, so guess who was the chef cooking at the barbecue all night? Well, at least my kids had a good laugh, that is until 11:30pm. I'm afraid they're a bit too young to stay for the whole session, although they argued that they were!
I know it sounds really sad and nerdy, but I bet there are quite a few of you who'd be interested in the next NerdNight. If so, contact the Editor or myself and I'll ping you when it's next scheduled, hopefully there'll be some spare seats...
Internet PC Auctions
I know I've recommended this site before, but it's such a cracking bargain site that I'm going to recommend it again. If you want a top quality PC at an excellent price, then visit: http://auctions.compaq.co.uk as they are obviously off-loading discontinued models. For instance, today there was 13 Compaq Presarios 1.47GHz, 256MB RAM, 40Gb Hard Drive, 16Speed DVD, 12 Speed CD-RW, 64Mb GeForce Video Card, WinXP Home Edition, etc and the current Dutch bid price is £221 inclusive, although I'd bet the eventual price would
be between £361 and £401 inclusive. Even though this doesn't have a monitor, it's still a very, very competitive price for a top quality Compaq PC; I know because I've now got two.
Hopefully by the time you read this, they'll still be selling the discontinued PCs, if so get in quick, but don't bid too high.

Be Lucky and see you next month
