BORWICK BUYS PHIL WARREN'S UNIQUE COLLECTION OF LONDON TAXI MEMORABILIA |
||
Jamie Borwick, Chairman of
LTI's Parent Company Manganese Bronze Holdings Ltd, has bought Phil
Warren's unique collection of historical material relating to the London
taxi trade. Jamie has personally purchased the collection to ensure that it is not broken up and lost when Phil retires to Australia later this year. Phil Warren's collection represents a lifetime's work and contains rare documents, photographs and artefacts from the trade dating back to its very beginnings in the 1600s, from the time of Oliver Cromwell to the present day. The highlights of the collection include the document listing all the original drivers licensed by Oliver Cromwell in 1654, one the original metal fare tables, taxi meters from throughout the years and many photographs of horse drawn and hansom cabs. Speaking to Call Sign, Jamie Borwick told us: "I am delighted to have purchased Phil Warren's important and wide-ranging |

that the collection continues to be enjoyed by those who wish to see it
and I'm particularly keen that the PCO continues to display those parts of
the collection it deems important for the rest of the trade to see. Other
parts of the collection may, in time, be displayed at London's Transport
Museum and the Museum of British Road Transport." |
"I am so
pleased that the collection is going to a good home and to an owner who
cares about the trade. Indeed, over the years, he and his company have
invested huge amounts of money into our famous trade that is the envy of
New York and Berlin. I would like to take this opportunity to publicly
thank Jamie for this final act of generosity. It means I can retire to
Australia with peace of mind knowing that it is in good hands and will be
accessible to TfL, the PCO and not least, drivers. Hopefully people who
see the collection will be able to appreciate where the trade has come
from and perhaps glean some clues as to where it is going. I'm sure that
all the trade is grateful to Jamie for this." Phil ended with these few pertinent words: "I'd like to say to the trade 'be lucky' as I prepare to retire to Australia..." |
