Last month's Call
Sign asked whether Dial-a-Cab's blond bombshell shooting wonder, Donna
Merry, had reached the point of burnout because ever since taking the
Scottish championship at Dundee's Auchterhouse shooting range, her
performances just seemed to collapse. It started at the British championships in Derby; following a perfect first round, her shooting just suddenly fell away. Donna couldn't explain it other than to tell Call Sign that she was feeling very tired. Then two weeks later, Donna was shooting in Nottingham for the British Doubles Championship and her performance sank below even that of Derby... "I was awful again, I just couldn't do anything right. I just felt so tired throughout," Donna told us afterwards. Part-time working at DaC, studying IT at University, shooting at the highest level and flying or driving to events around the whole of the UK were starting to wear her down. So she started to have a few more early nights and to have the occasional lay-in in the morning. |

'Burnout' as Donna Captures the Irish Championship! |
|
![]() "I slowly started to feel better," said Donna, " and for the first time in ages I went to an event feeling full of energy! I really fancied my chances." That "event" saw Donna flying to Londonderry to compete in the Irish Championships at Colerain on a very windy day - an event that she went on to win and almost score an incredible - and embarrassing for some - double. Donna took the Ladies Irish Championship quite easily and amazingly only just failed to take |
the Mens title as well! Those who
know Donna will agree that there is no way on Earth that anyone could
mistake her for a man, but in skeet shooting - although unusual - it's
possible for a woman to win a man's title. "I just needed more sleep, that's all it was," said a relieved Donna, "it wasn't burnout, as Call Sign so kindly put it, it was more a sleep-out!" And now, while the rest of the shooting world head to Texas for the World Championships where Donna won silver and bronze last year, Donna is concentrating on working hard at Uni for her IT degree. "But I'll be back in March for the new season," said Donna, "and I'll be aiming to win the lot!" And if Donna says she can, then that's good enough for Call Sign... DaC will still be represented in Texas by John Wells. A report will be in the next issue... |
