Michael & Maxine Son boogie the night away.

By Ken Crawford (B40)

Saturday August 4th saw the Children's 'Magical Taxi Tour' Dinner and Ball held at the Marriott Hotel in Duke Street, where over two hundred people enjoyed a fabulous evening of fundraising fun.
Our very own More Bacon & Eggs Poluck (T55) conducted the proceedings and started with an announcement that the evening would be extended until 1am. Russell then went on to introduce Phil Davies, Past Master of the Company of Hackney Carriage Drivers and Chairman of our Disney Committee, who thanked everyone for their support.
Background music throughout dinner allowed conversation to ebb and flow as old friends renewed acquaintances, new friendships were made and tickets for the raffle were sold - mainly the wrong colour as far as my table were concerned! Dial-a-Cab had, as usual, provided one of the star prizes.
DaC were well represented, with familiar faces including Brian and Brenda Rice, Michael and

What a Night at
the Marriott!

The Dial-a-Cab table

Maxine Son, Allan and Gill Evans, Howard Pears and Wendy, Call Sign's TV star John Dixon (B67) and Louise, Ritchie (F29) and Pat Old, Barbara, Ellise and Debra Poluck and me (B40) with my wife Gill and most probably many others who didn't buy me a drink!
WARNING! Guys interested in Debra Poluck should be aware that she runs marathons and gives her sponsorship money to her dad; however, the Children's Magical Taxi Tour to Disney gratefully received a handsome cheque from her at the dinner.
The Outing also received another monster cheque presented by Mrs Barbara Berry from Access.
Dancing was to the Jack Hawkins Band, fronted by a singer/saxophonist in a white tux who we all thought was Jack Hawkins. Hasn't he changed a lot since making The Cruel Sea! A really great outfit - no Ed, not his clobber, the band!
Then we had a real treat, Patricia Stanley had organised a stunning performance by Colin's
Performing Arts Academy from Romford Seventy kids aged from 7 to 21 who for 45 minutes kept us totally enthralled. They started with their version of River Dance, quickly followed by a Spanish number, ballet, duets and solos from many shows and finally, dressed as Cockney 'wrinklies', the funniest skit about taxis anyone present had ever heard! Applause rippled round the ballroom throughout their show...but then at the end, the whistling and thunderous applause almost demolished the Hotel.
What A Show! When Russell then told us that they had donated their performance to us for free, the cheering and noise resulted in the Met. Bomb Squad being put on alert! A really polished, professional performance by a gang of dedicated kids who gave their all and who obviously enjoyed doing it.
The raffle and Russell's fiddle raised about £2000. Both he and Patricia Stanley would like to thank everyone for their very generous support.
