Could you run a mile in 7
minutes 55 seconds? Yes? Well how about doing 26 of them with an average
of 7 minutes 55 seconds for each and every one of those torturous miles!
Not so easy, but that's exactly what Dial-a-Cab driver Maggie O'Connor
(M72J) did at the London Marathon. Out of an estimated 30,206 starters, Maggie came in 3655, meaning that she beat around 26,500 other competitors with her excellent time of 3 hours 27.11 minutes. In the ladies event only, Maggie finished 270 out of 6858 and bearing in mind that there were quite a few professionals running, that is an amazing performance for a 'fun runner'. Maggie, who joined Dial-a-Cab in September as part of a doubled-team with husband Peter, had been in serious training for the race since last Christmas, although she runs every week with the East London Runners at Wanstead along with DaC's superhuman Triathlon star Jon Trevor (W94). Speaking to Call Sign, Maggie said that she had run two London Marathons in the 1980's and was determined to do a third in her 40th birthday year. That was in 2000, but unfortunately a calf injury prevented her taking part. The organisers however allowed her to use last year's spot in this year's 2001 Flora London Marathon and so, now 41, she set out and beat those |
