PASS KNOWLEDGE - JOIN DAC - WIN LOGO DRAW - THAT'S JIM...!
July's logo winner hasn't wasted any time in getting his paws on the
monthly £300 logo draw winnings. In fact getting his 'paws' on the loot might
be a good expression for Jim Moore (M58), one of whose hobbies is training pet
dogs and turning them into working dogs!
Jim passed out from the Knowledge of London just 18 months ago and
following a year of pushing his cab around London's streets, finally decided to
join Dial-a-Cab and see if there was a better way...
"The best thing I had done since being in the Trade,"
Jim told Call Sign.
In addition to training dogs, Jim lists among his hobbies military
history and fishing - possibly the most diverse range of hobbies of any logo
winner since Arthur Freedman's dog poky turned up at ODRTS Pentonville Road
with a two pound perch tuck in its mouth asking for his masters 1/9d logo
winnings in 1957...! Well WE believed it!
Jim is happily married to Cathy and they have three grown up
children, including 21-year old twins.
As a last topical word, Call Sign asked Jim why the Knowledge was taking so
long. He did it in 4 years on a part-time basis...
"The biggest problem" said Jim "is that an 84 day
appointment works out at about 120 days, while an 28 day visit can stretch out
to 40 days or longer. There just aren't enough examiners...
As there was no July issue of Call Sign, we couldn't tell you that
the winner of the June draw was Peter Simmons (T84)...At least that dispels the
possibility of suddenly acquiring 'hangers on' who only want you for your
money!

LTI MAKES MAJOR DONATION TOWARDS DISNEY TRIP FOR TERMINALLY ILL CHILDREN
London Taxis International is helping to provide a special holiday for
chronically and terminally ill youngsters - with a £5000 donation to the
Company of Hackney Carriage Drivers' annual 'Magical Taxi Tour'. The cash will
cover the costs of fuel for taxis to transport around 100 children from
hospitals across London, together with their families and carers, for a holiday
at Disneyland Paris.
This will be the eighth year that the Magical Taxi Tour has taken
place and more than 100 cabs will make the trip from 5-7 October. All of the
taxi drivers give their time for free, while support also comes from the
Metropolitan Police, Marks & Spencer, the London Ambulance Service, P&O
Ferries and the Automobile Association.
LTI is a long-time supporter of the Company's work and Mike
McRedmond, Managing Director of London Taxi Finance, with Mike Saunders of LTI
dealer Mann & Overton (London), have been regularly involved as drivers.
Senior members of the Company of Hackney Carriage Drivers were
handed the cheque by senior personnel at London Taxis International during a
tour of LTI's Coventry manufacturing facility.
Roy McMaster, Managing Director, Retail & Marketing at LTI,
told Call Sign: "The Magical Taxi Tour is a wonderful opportunity for
chronically and terminally ill children to enjoy a very special trip to
Disneyland Paris. It would not be possible without the commitment of the
Company of Hackney Carriage Drivers and their members who give up their time to
make the trip each year, and we are delighted to support them with this
donation."
Phil Davis, Chairman of the Disney Organising Committee for the
Company of Hackney Carriage Drivers, added: "LTI has always supported our
efforts generously and we are very grateful for this donation which removes one
of our major headaches, by covering all of the fuel costs for the whole trip
for more than 100 vehicles."
Call Sign will have a report of the trip from our man there, Ken
Crawford (B40)...
