The December Call Sign
published an article by Allen Togwell on stress and many seemed to agree
with Allen's comments. In this article, Call Sign's Poet Laureate, David 'Kupkake'
Kupler (Y74) adds his view...
Too many of us die early or have to quit our jobs because of STRESS
related problems. I am very aware of this important issue and have taken
steps to counteract the stress levels wherever possible so as to enable me
to live a stress reduced life style. This is the formula I employ as a
driver to change my lifestyle wherever possible, leaning towards a
STRESSLESS existence and I have asked the Editor for space to share it
with you. The Stress Is There If You Allow It To Be... |

front of me. My first reaction was to put my head out of the window and shout
some kind of abuse usually ending with a reference to the offending drivers
personal sexual habits! Not any more... Now, I hold back, breathe deeply and may shake my head in disapproval. That's all. When somebody cuts across with no consideration for my space, I let them get on with it. Sooner or later they will probably do this to another driver who is not as patient and that person will take whatever action necessary to show them the error of their ways. It's not MY job to police motorists. And speaking of police, I used to get really angry at the lack of police responsibility regarding the thousands of pirates blatantly touting nightly on the streets. Not any more. The police don't care - so why should I? Every time a scab picks up on the street, the offence of 'without proper insurance' is committed. This carries a 3-6-point penalty plus a fine. But the police do not seem to bother to prosecute for whatever reasons, so why should I worry? I just 'let it go'. How do I manage to achieve such calmness? By following a simple daily program... |
Starting the day... I'm a night driver and usually wake between 10 and 11am. I never, ever rush out of bed to begin my day. When I am ready, I make my way downstairs and prepare a cup of coffee. I will not open the mail yet. There could be an overdue bill or some other bad news and I do not wish to start MY day with a stressful event. When the weather is fine, I will go to the garden and sit next to the fishpond and watch the fish as I drink that first cup of coffee. This part of my daily preparation is very important. I will always sit with my feet planted solidly on the ground and not slouching. This puts me in direct contact with the earth. You may smile, but try it and see. For at least 30 minutes I will sit there and do nothing! During this time I 'get into my body'. Still smiling...? The doing-nothing part is for me probably the most important part of stress awareness. By being calm at the start of the day, there is a good chance that it may continue and if it doesn't, at least I have tried to get it right. In a way, this period is a form of meditation.
