In a surprise presentation made at the 'past chairmen' plaque
ceremony at the HAC, former Call Sign Editor Gerald (Jery) Craig was
honoured by Call Sign Magazine for his wonderful work as a cartoonist
for the trade as a whole throughout the past 35 years. Kept as a secret from Gerald by the Editor, with much help from Gerald's wife Barbara, the surprise plaque was presented in a moving, yet humorous speech from the Officer in Charge at the Public Carriage Office, Roy Ellis. Detailing the history of the mystery recipient, Gerald had not a clue that Mr Ellis was referring to him until he started to slip in some dates! Suddenly Gerald's face began to go a bright shade of red as he realised that the glowing tributes were aimed at him as the trade's foremost cartoonist. Call Sign decided to add the award when TAXI Newspaper's Jehu mentioned in one of his trade history articles, seeing the cartoons of "someone called Jery in the 1960's." Showing the piece to Gerald, it transpired that this was his 35th year as a cartoonist for the taxi trade of London. He has worked as Derv (Steering Wheel/Cab Driver), Hack (Taxi Globe) and Jery in TAXI. He of course |
continues as Jery in Call Sign. The trade press were there to honour
Gerald and as the flash bulbs popped, Barbara had to put an arm around
him. He looked deeply moved and so far as Call Sign is concerned,
nobody deserves the award more. Also invited to the ceremony as a surprise guest was to have been ![]() PCO's Roy Ellis presents Jery with his plaque 90 year old Jehu himself (Simon Kogan). Several weeks earlier, TAXI Editor Stuart Pessok told Call Sign that Jehu had been taken ill and was in hospital. Tragically, Simon died on June 26th. All at Call Sign send their condolences to his wife and family. |
