Pressman looks at the origins of some more famous phrases...
MIND YOUR LANGUAGE |

I've always admired people who can put words together so
that others, for generations to come, can enjoy their wit and knowledge.
I have been making a collection of some that I've enjoyed over the years
and I hope that for the coming months that you will enjoy reading them
too. There are comments by many famous and unknown writers on a wide
variety of subjects. I have listed them alphabetically. The first is a comment on absence or separation, a Mr T.H.Bayly once commented that: "Absence makes the heart grow fonder" - whether he meant of someone else, we'll never know! That wonderful Scottish poet and writer, Robert Burns, wrote my most treasured expression: "O would some power the gift to give us, to see ourselves as others see us." Or would that really be the gift we would least choose - at least after we had tried it out once! Moving to the cinema, that wonderful film star Katherine Hepburn once said: "I don't care what is written about me, so long as it isn't true!" Speaking about the truth automatically moves your mind onto the subject of advertising - it does, doesn't it? Cowboy film star |
Will
Rogers once commented: "If advertisers spent the same amount of
money improving their product that they do on advertising it, they
wouldn't have to advertise it." There's a hidden logic in there somewhere just as there is in Mr A.Shoaff whose moment of fame came with the phrase: "Advertising is the art of making whole lies out of half truths!" None of us should be too proud to accept advice and I like former US President Harry Truman's (1884 - 1972) quote when he said: "I have found the best way to give advice to your children is to find out what they want and then advise them to do it!" Any of you out there in Call Sign-land ever thought about starting a family tree? It is very addictive but extremely rewarding. Our ancestors were |
naturally important in shaping our future, like the
famous comedian Fred Allen, who said: "I don't have to look up my
family tree because I know that I was the sap." Thinking about it,
every man serves a purpose. A miser, for example, is a miserable
relation yet makes a wonderful ancestor. Will Rogers couldn't have had too much time to ride his horse as he seems to have spent most of his time pushing phrases around. Another of his was: "It's kinda' funny, but no matter how common our blood is, we hate to lose any of it." And another truism from a man with the wonderful name of Ring Lardner who said: "The family you come from isn't as important as the family you're going to have" Moving on to the subject of animals, another former US President, Abraham Lincoln (1809 - 1865) said: "No matter how much cats fight, there always seem to be plenty of kittens!" And more to the point, Bill Vaughan once exclaimed: "We hope that when insects take over the world, they will remember with gratitude how we took them along on all our picnics." See you next month... |
