Football: Broadgate Celtic 2 Dial-a-Cab 3

Dial-a-Cab Triumph
in Battle of the Titans

The heading of this article was going to be ‘Whoops! What have they done’ following the first two matches - and two defeats - of 1999 in the Five-a-Side Lunchtime League. Fuji International beat us 5-3 and then Jago trounced us 6-2. Following the Fuji match, the team agreed that they just did not perform. Old pro, David Adelman gave the team an absolute roasting. That obviously did wonders for the next game against Jago. DaC had one player sent off and another sent to the sin bin for 10 minutes! With three players left, they were probably lucky to only lose 6-2! Another unimpressive performance and one that forced radical changes to be made if we were to keep up our Championship challenge.
Players sent off receive an automatic ban for three games and with goalkeeper Lee Morland and Trevor Smith (V78) out

with injuries, there were problems just picking a team to play their mid-table opponents, Late Again, let alone restoring the pre-Christmas high that saw us top the league table. Dave Adelman approached Board Member Keith Cain to rearrange his diary so that he could make a comeback after missing four games. Newcomers - telephonists Paul Richards and Chad Gomez - were called upon to add youth and fitness. With team places up for grabs, the team put up a solid performance and ran out winners by 6-2. Paul showed the pace and style of Ryan Giggs while Chad showed the agility between the posts that earned him the nickname ‘The Cat’ after Chelsea’s former ‘keeper Peter Bonetti.
The league position was now showing Dial a Cab in second place, seven points away from table-toppers Broadgate Celtic but with a game in hand. The team’s next match, which took place on Friday 5th February, was against the leaders and DaC knew that a defeat would put the title beyond their grasp.
Big Dave Adelman reported back from a Sunday Corinthian league match - playing for Theydon Bois against Epping - with a chipped ankle bone and is out for up to six weeks. Controller Lee still had a
shoulder strain and Keith was looking at a long Board meeting. By Tuesday David and Keith had chosen the team for the Clash of the Titans. Chad in goal with Lee Morland leaving his usual goalkeeping duties to play central defender because of his height and build. Alongside him, Controller Joe Brazil with young Paul Richards in the middle and Controller Bradley McDonald up front. Substitutes were Gabriel Sam-Yorke (K53) and Board member Keith Cain.
Five minutes into the game, DaC were awarded a free kick. Joe Brazil swung his left leg over the ball misleading their defence and side footed the ball to Bradley McDonald to shoot into the corner of the net. Broadgate bounced straight back within seconds taking a well-worked equaliser. Broadgate were now displaying a very physical approach but, showing their mettle, Dial-a-Cab matched them in every way.
Then Lee Morland, who had taken a nasty blow to his leg in the first minute, hit a great solo effort that saw their goalkeeper diving the wrong way. With DaC now 2-1 up, Broadgate were finding it harder to get their shots in but then they were awarded an indirect free kick. The
wild shot at goal took a disappointing deflection off Bradley McDonald which gave Chad no chance - 2-2 and Bradley had scored for both sides!
With the match approaching the final minutes, Broadgate seemed content with the draw that would maintain their seven point advantage.
DaC had earlier brought on mighty sub Gabriel Sam-Yorke. Suddenly he turned the defenders and let fly with a cracking shot into the bottom corner of the net; 3-2 to DaC.
The last few minutes saw Dial-a-Cab stroke the ball around in their own positive style leaving Broadgate to do the chasing. The league leaders had met their match. A Dial-a-Cab team that was determined to retain it’s credibility and show the rest that they are still the team to beat. Without doubt the best game of the season. The boys done well…!
