Just for a change, lets
leave the cab trade briefly and look at a web site for children - and I've found one that
I absolutely adore, it's Paddington Bear's official web site available at http://www.paddingtonbear.co.uk and it's absolutely brilliant. They use Macromedia's Flash product effectively
to produce stunning animated graphics with the content and navigation being first rate. The home page greets you with an image of Paddington Bear together with their theme tune playing in the background. From here you're automatically taken to the contents page where the main links consist of: About Paddington, Paddington News, Especially for Children, Paddington Products, Charity support, TV & Books, ScreenSaver, Paddington Postcards, and Contact us. All About Paddington explains how Mr and Mrs Brown first met Paddington Bear at Paddington Station; Especially for children is a very good section with some nice features such as Print & Paint where you can print an outlined image of PB for the children to colour in, Jigsaw Puzzle which is an online Jigsaw puzzle and Word Search which, amazingly, is an online word search! Together, these form a nice section that will keep your kids quiet for hours, OK I exaggerated, maybe minutes instead! Other nice features that I found were that you could turn the music on or off on all pages just by clicking the image of a ticket, also there was a nice screensaver included that downloaded and worked first time - unlike LT I 's! They also supplied a nice postcard utility that enabled you to create a Paddington Bear postcard on their web site - add some text to it and it would then generate an email to the person you selected supplying them with an email that contained a hyperlink connecting them to their postcard page on the Paddington Bear web site - nice touch. Oh, by the way, they also advertised Paddington Bear accessories and goods, then again what else would you expect from the official Paddington Bear web site! Worth a visit? Absolutely yes!! 10 out of 10 for design, content, and navigation. Now back to the UK taxi trade. Computer Cab's http://www.comcab.co.uk appeared on the Net with no apparent fanfare so I visited it to give it my once over. The Com Cab web site is OK, they've got some nice graphics together with some nice rollover effects (colours change when you pass the mouse over it) but that's all. I don't know what I expect from a UK taxi company when they create a web presence, but no one as yet has sparked my enthusiasm - especially when they can't get a simple form to work. I thought I'd test their "Open a Taxi Account" link. |
I filled out the form, clicked
the button and guess what? It didn't work! It couldn't find a page called
"thankx.htm", I don't think they're going to get many new clients that way! To
see a basic form that works, visit: http://www.taxicab.co.uk/journals/pwarren/history/Default.htm
This is a form that visitors must complete to read chapter two of
Phil Warren's "The History of The London Cab Trade". It's quite straight
forward, it takes the users input and immediately generates an email that gets sent to me
with all the user's details. But at least I know Com Cabs mission statement now: "Our mission at Computer Cab is to provide sustainable quality services to customers and drivers by the innovative use of our people and our technology, profitably". I love the "profitably" bit at the end! For adults and schoolchildren wishing to learn, try visiting http://www.bbc.co.uk/education I do like the BBC's site, especially the Modern history section. Two areas in history that I really do enjoy researching are: The English Civil War and Modern History, I especially liked the section titled: "Why did Hitler fail to defeat Britain in 1940?" One of their answers was: "The determination of the British people in holding on alone from June 1940 until 1941" There's also a whole section related to a TV series titled "Century Roads" concerning four roads all built in 1900 and all named Century Road. I'm afraid I don't watch much television, but I do browse the Net, OK I know, I'm a sad old g**, I get told often enough! Ed. You can have a look at Vince Chins excellent taxi web site on http://www.taxicab.co.uk You can visit Call Sign while you are there
