quality sound. Eventually all television sets will be built for digital
reception and analogue will be phased out completely. BSB, who already have half a million subscribers, are conducting an extensive marketing campaign to gain even more subscribers by giving away the decoder box FREE! You just pay a £40 installation charge plus the monthly subscription fee of between £7 and £32, depending on which program package you select. So what do you get if you subscribe? You get a free SkyDigital box and dish, free access to the Internet via a home PC (via Sky's own Internet provider 'Skynow') and, for SkyDigital subscribers, 40% off all standard BT calls starting from this summer. The new system provides as many as 200 new channels, from sport, film, |
lifestyle, shopping, etc, and is also linked to telephone services
which will enable subscribers to access the Internet and interactive
shopping. From September, viewers will be able to watch films when they want as there will be a choice of up to 25 movies a night starting as often as every fifteen minutes. If you miss the start of the film when you get home from work at say, 7.30pm, you can have a shower, eat your meal, tuck the kids up in bed and sit down and watch the start of the same movie at 8.15, 8.45, 9.00, etc .... Sky Sports Extra is another tantalising addition to BSkyB's viewing panoply. Astonishingly, it will allow the viewer to select highlights, instant replays and match statistics at the touch of a button - while the match is in progress! This will be launched at the start football season in August. Another very big plus is Sky's hand held remote control. From it, the viewer can just click into the |
colour-coded screen and dip into the great mass of
programme information that makes choosing the
news/films/soaps/documentaries or sports action so extremely easy to
select. A big bonus is for parents. By punching in a secret 'PIN' (which can be changed as many times as you like if the PIN number is 'sussed') parents can bar their kids from (a) seeing 'dodgy' films and (b) spending too much money on pay-per-view' without permission. BSkyB's PR chief, Alexandria Wight, is acutely aware that London's cab drivers are a veritable font of knowledge and of the power of their 'subliminal' influence when it comes to disseminating information and opinion on the very latest innovations and trends. She would like to recruit the capital's cab drivers to pass the message on. So if you're interested in seeing just how it all happens, contact the editor to make a date at Isleworth where BSkyB will be happy to show you around. There could be something in it for you! |
