This months puzzle to win a CD…

The Man With The Wood

A man had some wood. On Monday, it was in the shape of a cube. The next day, he had changed it into the shape of a cylinder, and on the next, into the shape of a pyramid. He did not cut or carve the wood into these shapes. How did he do it?
If you think you know the answer, send it in to Susan Murray, CSK, Marketeer, FREEPOST, LON3674, London, W4 2BR. One winner, chosen from the correct answers, will receive the CD reviewed in this month’s edition.

Last months puzzle answer:
A man was looking through a window on the 10th floor of a multi-story building. Suddenly, he was overcome by an impulse. He opened the window and leapt through it. It was a sheer drop outside the building to the ground. He didn’t use a parachute or land in water or any other soft surface. Yet the man was completely unhurt when he landed. How could that be so?
The answer? He was a window cleaner and jumped from the outside of the building to the inside! There were no winners and only several entries. Could that be because no one understood what

it was about? Now you know, so try this month’s puzzle at the top of the page to win a copy of the Semisonic CD.

Big Mouth
Impressed your friends and family with your extensive vocabulary yet? Last month, CSK brought you some weird and wonderful words beginning with the letter ‘A’ (complete with definition)., to drop into conversation and confuse everyone There’s more this month, this time, turning to the letter ‘B’:
B is for Brimborion:- MEANING something useless or nonsensical. This word may have come in handy if someone gave you a useless/silly present for Christmas and you’re lost for words - you could say something like "What a brimborion present!"

Music Review
Semisonic:-
‘Feeling Strangely Fine’
This rather stereo-typical American band fits neatly into the ‘indie-rock’ category. If it’s your cup of tea, look out for the songs ‘Closing Time’ - a true anthem in the making - and the chirpy ‘Singing In My Sleep’.

I’D LIKE TO BE…
Thinking about the future when you leave school? Call Sign will try to give you some practical advice in each issue. This issue…

I’D LIKE TO BE A RECEPTIONIST…
Who better to give advice on becoming a city receptionist than Lorna Ewin, winner of The Times / Dial-a-Cab City

Receptionist of the Year award. Although she stood against strong competition, her professional, unflappable attitude convinced the judges that she should receive the prestigious title.
Lorna works in the London office of American legal firm, Shook, Hardy & Bacon, but began her career in a very different area - catering. After beginning her working life catering in a large hospital in Wales, Lorna decided to take a diploma in reception work. This led to receptionist work in hotels and restaurants. She told Call Sign:
"I think that gaining my diploma helped me secure my position, especially when I was applying for the hotel receptionist work," she commented. "it shows a commitment to the career path you’ve chosen."
However, long hours of shift work and the desire for a more financially rewarding career led Lorna to a change of direction. Four years ago, she began working for the legal firm she still belongs to now.
"Appearance, common sense and using your initiative are some of the most important skills a receptionist can possess," Lorna advised, "along with a friendly and professional manner." The judging panel all agreed that Lorna possessed these and many other skills to set her above the other short-listed contenders for the award, and win her a weekend break to Paris - travelling by Eurostar.
"I’m pleased and shocked to have won this award," said Lorna, "and I’m really looking forward to my trip to Paris."

The staff at Brunswick House are a very important part of the Dial a Cab organisation. In fact, without them there wouldn't be an organisation! So Call Sign aims to make this their magazine too. In each issue, we'll introduce some of the people who work for Dial a Cab yet have never driven a cab in their lives....

WHO’S WHO

As most of you now know, Dial-a-Cab has been successful in retaining the Westminster account for a further five years. Two of the Call Centre staff whose job it is to monitor the Westminster and Special Needs accounts are the subjects of this months Who’s Who…

CHRIS HUCKSTEP
Aged twenty and just two months away from being wed, Chris was ‘famous’ for his canned messages concerning Code 11’s on the Special Needs account until Colin Walters (K83) actually tallied up the number of messages going out (November Mailshot) since which time the messages have been curtailed.

Chris Huckstep
"Amazingly" Chris told Who’s Who, "we had been begging drivers in those

messages to use their Code 11’s (waiting 5 minutes) with little success. Following Mr Walters letter, I cancelled many of the messages and suddenly drivers started to use Code 11. I was amazed but delighted!"
Chris was taken on as a temp call taker in September 1996 and was put onto ‘regular bookings’ about a year ago dealing mainly with Social Services.
Chris claimed that he didn’t have any time for hobbies but when pressed, came up with surfing, target shooting and drinking with Chris assuring us that the drinking is always after the shooting and not before! From all at DaC, good luck for the future to Chris and his bride-to-be.

EDIE WILSON

Edie Wilson

Like Chris Huckstep, Edie is also aligned to regular bookings mainly with the Westminster and Special Needs accounts. She has been with Dial-a-Cab for almost fourteen years, the last twelve having been with regular bookings and the first two as a call taker. Edie enjoys her job and the people she works with.
"I couldn’t have lasted fourteen years otherwise!" she says with a smile.
Edie has been married to David for a magical 43 years and together they have raised three children. Her secret for a successful marriage? "We are just happy together."
Other than her work, Edie’s hobbies include sewing and shopping - that’s the leisurely sort rather than the weekly trip around Sainsbury! Together with David, Edie enjoys a leisurely drive in the country. "As the children live all over the place, it’s just as well that we do enjoy the drive!" said Edie with a laugh.
She also enjoys writing poetry and one of her examples can be seen somewhere in this issue. And one final congratulation to Edie being the first person we have interviewed who doesn’t particularly list drinking as one of her hobbies!
