The death occurred last month following a fairly prolonged period of ill
health, of former ODRTS Chairman Peter Fennymore.
Peter took over the Chairmanship from Martin Gelman (C47J) following Martin's decision to stand down prior to the 1976 AGM. He held the position until the completion of our move from Shirland Road to Brunswick House on Saturday 11th August 1984 - a move that had been negotiated from start to finish by Peter and his Board following several years of searching for suitable premises. |

PETER FENNYMORE

Although Kenny Burns was the 'stand-in' Chairman at the time of
the BH move - gaining the position officially at the '84 AGM in November of
that year - Peter was given the honour of calling the first job from the
Brunswick House control room. At that moment, our company name of ODRTS took
second place to the new trading name of Dial-a-Cab (prior to that we had the
rather less-used name of All London Radio Taxis which had been designed
purely as a way of getting us into the Yellow Pages before any other taxi
company - starting as it did with the letter A). In Peter's last Chairman's Report in Call Sign (July/August 84), the pride he felt at the success of finding a building ideally suited to our purposes really shone through. During his later years, Peter found happiness in retirement to a pub in Dorset where he lived until his sad passing........ RIP Call Sign spoke to Aubrey Siteman, who knew Peter well in addition to working with him and also to Ken Burns who succeeded Peter as Chairman: |
Aubrey Siteman (Chairman 1992 - 1996) It was with great sadness that I learnt of the passing of former Dial-a-Cab
Chairman Peter Fennymore. Peter had not been in the best of health these past
few years. He retired from the trade a year or two ago and went to live with
his daughter and son-in-law in Dorset. |
contribution, however important, lost in the mist of time, it is indeed a
sad fact of life. I was pleased that whilst I was Chairman, I invited him up
to lunch to thank him for his work over the years on behalf of all of us.
That, I know, he much appreciated. I do send our sincere condolences to his family, not only on behalf of those that knew him, but from all the members of the Society. Rest in peace. Ken Burns (Chairman 1984 - 1990): Peter Fennymore was the Chairman of ODRTS when I was elected to the BoM
in 1978. Under his Chairmanship, the Society prospered year on year. Among
his achievements were the successful implementation of Storno radio's with
the first fully digital vehicle identification (VI) system, the first door
logos, the first minimum-charge and waiting-time charges on account rides,
the purchase of Brunswick House and the use of a trading name (Dial-a-Cab). |

Sad Deaths of Two More DaC Drivers |
||
It seems
that this period in time has been particularly sad so far as the cab
trade and Dial-a-Cab are concerned. In addition to the trade's Geoff
Trotter and Chris Finch-Hatton - the Earl of Winchilsea and Nottingham -
DaC has sadly lost several members over recent months.
Last month, in addition to the already-reported death of former Chairman Peter Fennymore, Call Sign is sad to report the death of Maurice Moss (L68) in a tragic diving accident. Maurice was an |
accomplished deep sea diver who even wrote a Call Sign article on the
subject in July 1991. If anybody would like a copy of the article
(including three photographs), send the Editor your name and address and
we'll run off a copy for you. However sad Maurice's death is, some small
consolation perhaps, is that he loved diving and would have appreciated
the dangers involved. But doesn't lessen the sadness for those who survive
him - both family and friends. Also sadly passed away through illness since the last Call Sign was |
John
Khon (R30). Known better by the regulars on EC5 as 'Hungarian' John,
he had been on Dial-a-Cab for many years rarely changing his mode of work
- he was a regular night man on Finsbury Square who loved a moan
intertwined with a joke. In recent years he seemed to spend more time in
Thailand than here and revelled in telling other drivers how good it was
there. Yet another irreplaceable character. Call Sign sends it's deepest sympathies to the families of both Maurice and John...RIP. |
