I was driving down Bond Street passing Calvin Klein, when an arm shot out.
I stopped and a voice asked me if had a copy of The American in the cab. I gave him a copy
- wondering briefly why he had stopped me - and in return he congratulated and presented
me with two bottles of the finest Champagne! I felt great for the rest of the day!

INVADERS OF CALL SIGN!
I just read this page: page13.html and I
wanted to say thanks for Vince Chins very kind comments about my Invaders game (Computer
Chinchat; July Call Sign). As well as working for ICL, I also run On The Net as a
small web/cgi/javascript design house in my spare time. I
have been very lucky with the response I've had to Invaders and it has even brought me
some paying business. Once again, thanks for your kind words. I really appreciate it.

Editors note: The following letter was received by Tony Hizer (E63)
following his concern over the condition of an account client that he had picked up. I
have withheld the clients details for obvious reasons, but feel that the letter merits
publication as it shows a side of our drivers that doesnt often make headlines -
care and concern for clients

THANK YOU
I spoke today to Mr Whitbread who told me about your concern and the
care you took over one of our young employees. I cannot thank you enough or apologise
sufficiently for her behaviour. I gather she was very abrasive - I confess to being a
little surprised because, as you are aware, she frequently starts early and has often
commented on how nice the drivers are who pick her up are. I can only think that it was
the wine talking. That does not excuse her, but she had been working extremely hard and
for many long hours.
However, none of this is your problem and I can only say she was very lucky
to have you looking, after her. Very many thanks - you are obviously an exceptional cabby
- and much appreciated by my company.

THOUGHTFULNESS REQUIRED
I was sorry to read in the July Call Sign that the Chairman had suffered a
heart attack and I would like to wish him a speedy and complete recovery. Referring to
Ronald S. Colmans (B15) letter under "Welfare Department" in the July
edition, I am writing to say how much I agree with everything he said.
My husband, Fox 77, has been with Dial-a-Cab for twenty two years. Just
before he went into hospital in May for an operation to remove two cancerous growths in
his colon, he contacted the Welfare Department and requested that his terminal be stripped
out and he was promised that it would be refitted when he returned to work. I myself,
spoke to the Welfare Department on at least two occasions with queries. He was in hospital
for two weeks and at home for eight before taking the cab out. At no time did anyone from
Dial-a-Cab phone or write, he did not receive a card or flowers either in hospital or at
home and to this day no one has contacted him or me to enquire how he was and ask how we
were managing. He is very hurt and I am absolutely disgusted. He has always attended the
obligatory AGMs and |
EGMs, has
been a model subscriber, attended lectures and seminars and always worked by
the book.
The Chairman fully deserves all the cards, flowers and calls he received
during his illness. But at the end of the day he is a member just like my husband
and a card or some message from the Board would have been very much appreciated by us
both.
Cards and flowers? Welfare Department? Don't make me laugh

I hope that Ralph is feeling and progressing well. I also believe that the situation
in the Welfare Department has changed and that they do now try to keep in contact with
those whose sickness is long-term. It isnt quite as easy a job as it may seem to
keep tabs on who has a passing bout of Flu compared to someone like Ralph Hayman and it is
of great assistance if you know of any long-term sickness sufferers, to try to let the
Welfare Department know about them

DEMOCRATIC DEBATE?
Excuse me, but do you know the difference between democratic debate and
personal abuse? Im beginning to doubt that you do. I have met Ron Colman in the past
and liked him as a man. However, I thought his abusive tirade in the June Call Sign needed
answering; after all, what was he saying?
We should not criticise our "most acceptable representatives".
We should "shut up and be glad we have a job at all" (the inference
being that we should not change the status-quo).
Opponents, or "trouble-makers" as Ron calls them,
"
should have some sense knocked into their heads".
This last remark I find undemocratic and sinister, evoking images of men in
dark glasses with sawn-off shotguns. Look maybe Im being a little paranoid, but if
anyone tries to knock some sense into |
