Dial-a-Cabs Driver
Trainer, Paul Tully (Y40) was approached at Brunswick House and asked how he fancied
racing his Fairway against a brand new Jaguar XK8, an equally new Dodge Pick-Up truck and
no less than a black F355 racing Ferrari! "Wheres the starting point - and make sure the Dodge doesnt try to push me out of the way!" was Pauls only comment! "Whats it all about?" we hear Call Sign readers ask in unison. Well, its like this |

Pauls race was to publicise the European
launch by Hewlett-Packard of HP JetSpeed, a free high-speed
racing challenge and screensaver for the PC user and small-business sector, that
demonstrates the benefits of HP JetDirect print servers through this compelling form of
interactive entertainment. Anyone with a computer and modem can play HP JetSpeed. It is downloaded free of charge via the Internet at www.hp.com/go/racing and is a network-ready challenge that takes just minutes to install. Drivers can play solo or take on friends and colleagues before taking on the world, in a high-speed pursuit race across a selection of LAN circuits. All racers begin with a standard slot car, but high-performing drivers can qualify for a series of four possible car upgrades to reflect their lap speeds and racing proficiency. Slot cars can be swapped for a London taxi; a pickup truck; a Jaguar XK8; or, the ultimate car, a black F355 racing Ferrari. But who would want a black F355 Ferrari when you could have a black Fairway driven by our ace trainer! A personalised record sheet logs each player's fastest lap times. Track lap times are recorded automatically on personalised leader boards and expert F355 drivers can submit lap times to the HP JetSpeed Web site to compete for prizes and a place on the HP JetSpeed Champions League world-wide leader board! Yup, you are now competing against the rest of the world! "HP JetSpeed is geared to put HP JetDirect in pole position in the race for the small-business market," HP's European programs manager Phil Mount told Call Sign. "This is not only play-as-you-learn; it is also a quick way to recharge the batteries, unwind with colleagues after a hard day's work and build team interaction." HP JetSpeed was developed by Global Beach, the digital-communications agency that created the award-winning HP MOPY fish screensaver. Pro racing driver, Suzy Hart in Paul's cab. Clive Jackson, Globals CEO speaking to Call Sign, explained: "HP
JetSpeed allows every office worker to sample life in the fast lane as a Ferrari racing
driver. This is high-tech slot-car racing for the new millennium. Clearly the concept is
great fun, but it does have a serious purpose - it is educational and works across
language barriers (eight different languages) to drive home the HP JetDirect print-server
product benefits." |
