DACS JAMES COCHRANE FLYING HIGH In the October issue of Call Sign, we asked readers whether they had any hobbies or interesting pastimes that could be considered as being slightly out of the ordinary. First up is James Cochrane (C04) who teaches flying at a para-gliding club along with Kip Grimshaw (C60). If you think Call Sign readers would be interested in your hobby or pastime, let us know |

Is it a bird? .... is it a plane?
....no, it's Dial-a-Cab driver James Cochrane (C04). Chief Flying Instructor at the
Capital Para-Gliding Club, James spends his time sharing the sport he loves with others -
when he's not driving a cab, that is. And if you are wondering where youve heard James Cochranes name before, James won the LTI gold cab at the Taxi Driver of the Year Show A charity parachute jump, made over 15 years ago sparked James' interest. "The rush of adrenaline and the buzz of being 'on the edge' yet still in control - made typical pastimes seem dull and boring," he told Call Signs Susan Murray. From parachuting, he moved on to free-fall and hand-gliding, enjoying the challenge and excitement of these demanding sports. What began as a hobby became more serious as James decided to set up his own water-sports business. After much hard work, James gained the necessary licenses needed, and began his business in Devon. "You can't just set up a water-sports |
business," said
James, "Many licences and qualifications are needed - for example, I hold a boating
licence and a water-skiing license and spent a lot of time working away from home to
achieve this. The work was physically and mentally draining, but the end result was
definitely worth it. Looking back, Devon became a training ground for things to come.
After a couple of years I moved to Gibraltar, again running water-sports on a beach over
there," he continued. The opportunities and experiences were never to be forgotten. "We had to gain permission to enter air-space for the sports we ran on the beach, which meant I was regularly in contact with Wing Commanders and military officials that I would never have had the chance to speak to otherwise." Now regarded as an expert, James has used his knowledge to advise producers in the filming of the hit TV series 'Bugs' (starring ex-soap star Craig McLaughlin) and to see much of Europe, but |
what he enjoys most from his
sport is how it reveals participants 'real' character. "Para-gliding
takes inner guts and courage," James observed. "People come to the club from all
walks of life and of all ages and ability - I teach children and disabled members of the
community as well - but once you're in the air with someone, you realise that everyone is
the same underneath. Flying gives people a new perspective in life, and I love watching
their characters develop". "Anyone can learn to para-glide, although some may find it's not for them", James warned. "The risk element is always there and I have suffered several serious falls, but if you are prepared to take the chance, the experience is amazing! If you are inspired to take up para-gliding, James welcomes you to come down to the club where he and fellow Dial-a-Cab driver Kip Grimshaw (C60) both teach. Members can receive supervision and instruction in a controlled, club environment. If you would like to get involved, call James Cochrane on 01992 577 632. |
