Mailshot continued impartial
Court Report. That included such impartiality as suggesting that
"
the LCDC Court Reporter does not think that this application (put by David
Clegg) is unreasonable." What it applies to is irrelivent. It goes against
natural justice. There is a report in this issue under the Chairmans column. No
doubt you will claim it to be biased but I know what I believe between this report or a
nameless one in a paper that is constantly criticising DAC. Incidentally Mr Elmes, who do
you think the unbiased LCDC Court Reporter could have been? A clue? There were seven
people present in the court. The Clerk, three legal representatives, the Judge, Brian Rice
and David Clegg! Can it be that Brian Rice now writes for The Badge? When the case - or
sections of it - are over, then there will be a report as there is in this issue.
As a final thought, no one has had more space in Call Sign than David Clegg.
You claim that I am biased against him; this isnt true, either. I offered David a
platform to air his views many, many months ago. At that time, I assumed that David was
going to resign as he did in 1986 when he disagreed with Data Dispatch and said:
"For me to remain on the Board today and promote the Data Dispatch System would
be morally indefensible and if at the end of the day should you the membership decide to
accept it, I could not in conscience continue as a Board member and give it the
wholehearted support this project requires as I do not entirely accept it's alleged
virtues and merits".
He hasnt resigned on this occasion, so the offer was withdrawn. David could still
have written - in a non-controversial way - about his work as a member of the Board at any
time but has obviously chosen not to for reasons of his own.
Incidentally, Ron, I note that my private letter to you (detailed above)
found its way to Mr Clegg in record time and is now being offered in litigation
against me apparently showing how I censor Call Sign! I suppose being
neighbours has its advantages even if you dont know each other

NOT A FACE?
I have been on the circuit now for over 20 years and have at times been
reluctant in asking for information in the fear of getting a negative response like;
"don't know", "haven't a clue", "too busy" or even just
plain ignored. I put it down to the fact that I am just not a face. On the other hand, I
must be honest and say that on hearing the right voice I would receive the most helpful
information. It is quite difficult to put a name to a voice . There is one that I am
able to though, he is a fellow named Ivor (Belkin). I can always depend
on him for help. Unlike the character, however, from whom I sought information the other
week. I needed to know whether Stratford was open to change my meter. As soon as I heard
the voice, I knew I was in for a negative answer and it was. Then I made a suggestion;
could he pretend to know me and put out a message, "too busy" came the reply.
This was early on a Sunday morning. To him I send this message: "I don't need you
pal"!

THE TAXI DRIVER OF THE YEAR CHARITY FUND
At the A.G.M of the Taxi Driver of the Year Charity Fund, I stood down from
the Hon position of Chairman after being involved with the charity for the last 26 years -
16 of them as Chairman. Various good causes have benefited during this time and I would
like to thank all persons and organisations who have sponsored and helped during this
time, including drivers, taxi trade magazines and also my family.
Russell Poluck is the new Chairman and organiser and is looking forward to
seeing you at the Taxi Driver of the Year Show on the 26th July 1998 at the Barnes Elms
Sports Centre, Queen Elizabeth Walk, Barnes, SW 1 3
Bill Tyzack BEM (C6)
Happy retirement Bill! Your achievements within the LTDFUPC will go down in
cab trade history. You can honestly claim that you have made a difference

KIM
As always, the June issue of Call Sign was outstanding. I particularly
appreciated the centrefold - ie. the article by Laren Eggleston on Anchorage and thought
the 'Talking To' column was excellent - a real scoop talking to no less an authority than
an Assistant Commissioner at the Met. |
Sincerely sorry to hear
of your daughter Kim's illness but delighted to hear that she's recovering. Will say a
prayer.

Thanks to John Lanigan and all those of you who asked about my daughter Kim
following her sudden illness, your thoughts are much appreciated

NUCLEAR TESTING AND THE FOOD INDUSTRY!
In the last issue (July Call Sign) I noticed
the Editor urging us to boycott Indian restaurants as a way of protesting at the Indian
Governments recent nuclear tests. In the next piece, he informs us of a visit he
made to France - a country that also test nuclear devices regularly (in areas well away
from France, I might add - eg the South Pacific). Can we expect, then, a similar boycott
of French restaurants to be called for by Mr Fisher, or how about Chinese or American
restaurants, or will it be just Indian ones? If we just go to restaurants that sell food
from countries that dont have nuclear test plans, we will all lose weight rapidly.
My wife seems to think that this is at least an idea!
C.Hanrahan (B47)
A good point about my French trip, Mr Hanrahan - or should I say touché.
However, their tests were some time ago and I believe that the recent set of five Indian
tests followed by six from Pakistan have caused untold damage to the Earths core.
While no one has officially suggested a connection between those eleven underground tests
and the horrific earthquakes immediately afterwards in Afghanistan, I remain unconvinced.
We have to say "stop" sometime or there wont be a planet left to build
restaurants on. And if it helps your wife then that is a bonus

GET WELL SOON, BRIAN
I was very upset to hear about Brian Rices illness. I wish him a
speedy recovery back to full health.
Syd Nathan (K88)
Brian Rice would like to thank everyone for all the good wishes and flowers
that have been sent to him. Space prevents Call Sign from publishing all of them
