how the other half lives

What do Dial a Cab drivers' other halves really think of their partners as taxi drivers and of the way of life it invariably involves? Do they love it or loathe it? Call Sign’s Aisling Gavin went undercover to find out more...

According to our survey of Dial a Cab drivers, on average most of you spend just four waking hours per day at home with your family. If you are not in the cab, you are either sleeping or socialising away from home.
Antony and Lauris Hizer are a typical Dial-a-Cab family. Antony (37) and Lauris (35) have been married for almost 15 years and have two children. Antony was studying for The Knowledge when the couple got engaged.
Antony typically works long days, leaving early in the morning and often returning home at erratic times. A keen health and fitness fanatic, he also works out in the gym twice a week. Lauris and Antony quite often don't spend any time together until Sunday.
Lauris quoted not spending time together at the weekend as a cardinal sin whilst other wives cited eating breakfast alone or their husbands waking the rest of the house up at 4.30am as top of the sin list. Other irritations to be avoided at all cost included:

# Flushing the toilet either late at night or early in the morning…
# Failure to climb into bed quietly…
# Being over jolly in the morning (one wife was definitely not a morning person and could not understand her husband's desire to get in the cab by 5.00am every morning)…

Many wives / girl friends - particularly in the older age group - had given their husbands / boyfriends an ultimatum during their relationship, telling them to either reduce the hours spent in the cab or else...
Brenda and Mike Crane have been happily married for 31 years. Both are now aged 51 and Mike has reduced his hours so that he can get home by 3.00 pm. This enables him to spend more time together with Brenda and also the rest of his family.
Whilst Brenda was anxious that Mike slow down for his own sake and spend more time with the family, many other wives / girlfriends have different motivations for wanting their men to stay home. Gardening, DIY and a ‘better bedside manner’ scored highly among the list of extra curricular activities drivers’ other halves would like to see improved...
(Editors note: Sorry Aisling, ‘a better bedside manner’? What exactly are you insinuating here??)
On a more serious note, Barbara, wife of Russell Poluck, Vice-Chairman of the Taxi Driver of the Year Committee, is one of a growing number of women and men who are anxious about their partner's safety when they are driving in London. Barbara Poluck says:
"Particularly at this time of year, when it is getting dark so early, Russell always carries a mobile phone or is contactable on the radio. I do worry about Russell and like to speak to him throughout the day."
