In the October issue of Call Sign, we
published an interview with London Mayoral candidate-to-be, taxi driver Chas Kissin. This
was later picked up by London Taxi Times and followed closely by The Evening Standard and
Londons Carlton Television. We have now asked Jeffrey Archer for some comments on his ideas for London should he be successful. Anyone wishing to use the article, please do so as you probably will take it anyway ! Jeffrey Archer told Call Sign that he has developed a new idea to try and ease the capitals congested streets. He opposes plans to update current public transport, which is already at capacity and which was only ever designed for short local trips. What he suggests is to implement a new park and ride service. Commuters or other visitors would leave their cars at one of 15 points situated in Edgware, Barnet, Enfield, Chingford, Romford, Barking, Thamesmead, Bexleyheath, |
Bromley, Croydon, Sutton, Kingston, Hounslow,
Uxbridge and Harrow, then board an express bus service to the centre of London. The bus
would only stop four or five times throughout the journey and would travel in designated
bus lanes running at three minute intervals. He specifically added that taxis would be
allowed to drive along these lanes but that other traffic would not - rather like the
existing bus lanes. This scheme would cost £70 million to set up and a further £105 million a year to run (not including revenue from fares). However, he claims that this is well within the existing budget and would remove the need to raise taxes or impose road pricing. How would this plan specifically benefit taxi drivers? Well, it opens up a new target market of commuters who would be effectively stranded in central London if they all leave their cars at one of the designated park and ride points.
