from the editor's desk

Doesn’t time fly? This year only has four months to run with the AGM being just 12 weeks away on Sunday 29th November at the Stakis Metropole Hotel, Edgware Road in case you have forgotten or want to suggest a date for your nephew’s barmitzvah, wedding or if you are really clever - his birth! And I am well into my second year as Editor of Call sign. It just doesn’t seem possible.
That also means my ‘honeymoon period’ is well and truly over and that the criticisms are starting to come in - not pouring in as yet, but who knows how to stop a trickle from becoming a flood? By the time November 29th comes around, I may be submerged in complaints. I truly hope not, but who knows?

THE EDITOR’S VIEWS?
So far, most of those criticisms have come from a small group of drivers who work on EC5 and were given to me personally rather than by mail (I work there quite frequently as well). All have said the same thing - that I, as Editor, should not be allowed to give my personal view on any subject relating to Dial-a-Cab because it could sway drivers opinions.
Now, I may well be into my second year, but I am still relatively inexperienced and

Alan Fisher, Editor

perhaps I am wrong but I have always believed that an Editorial represented the views of the Editor. Have I been wrong to believe that?
I have also been criticised for publishing the views of a driver who ‘dares’ to say how wonderful he considers us to be. There was no criticism on my printing letters that could be considered as anti-DAC. Is there something wrong with saying that you are happy? If anyone has any views on the above, I’d be happy to publish them - for or against.
So what is the answer? We are the highest earning radio taxi organisation anywhere. No other has come anywhere near our profits (or surplus as we must call it because it all goes back into the society). So why do a small group of drivers constantly offer criticism but NEVER praise? I have no doubt that not everything we do is right - it would be a miracle if it were. But surely we must be doing

quite a lot right to have such a healthy society. We have never been in such a good position and if that irritates some drivers, well, I’m sorry but it is a fact.
No doubt I will hear first from the drivers concerned because I don’t hide myself and I like nothing more than a one-to-one chat. But it fascinates me to hear the criticism from some who NEVER offer any praise. If you would like to contribute a view to the above, please do to the usual address.

PHOTOGRAPHIC APOLOGY
My sincere apologies to Call Sign’s excellent photographer Alan Green for omitting to put his name in last issues centre page spread on the DAC Staff Awayday. All the photo’s were taken by him and I am delighted to correct the omission. Incidentally, in addition to driving a taxi, Alan is a professional photographer who did the photography at my wedding and I would recommend him to anyone.
