OBITUARY - Liz Goodwin

Shock and sadness were felt in the Call Centre at the news that Liz Goodwin, one of the Societies longest standing employees, had passed away on Tuesday 7th July 1998. Liz had been diagnosed with breast cancer at the end of 1997 but had responded well to treatment and we all hoped that eventually she would be able to return to work. Sadly, but for a very short period, this was not to be and after doctors diagnosed that the cancer had spread further, this terrible illness quickly overtook her.
Liz started work for Dial-a-Cab in the old Shirland Road office and moved with the company to Brunswick House. Many drivers will have brought her in to work on the night shift from W9 and a lot of night drivers will recognise the surname from messages answering their ‘advise arrivals’ - as Liz
's favourite task in the Call Centre was ring-backs. These type of calls are one of the

most awkward jobs to do, especially advising a client when there is nothing in the area. Liz's character was perfectly suited to the job, only stating what was on the screen and refusing to engage in any arguments.
This single minded approach was always applied. One of the most famous anecdotes from the Shirland Road days being Liz making a 999 call from the old switchboard. To make an outgoing call in those days, you had to press down a switch to get a line with each switch having a letter underneath. When the operator enquired which phone number Liz was calling from,
'X' was the reply!

One of my favourite memories of Liz would be from the time I worked with her on the night shift. One night, former dispatcher Phil Kirby, Joe Brazil and I were having a discussion about the comedian Peter Sellers. Three nights later with nothing said to prompt her, Liz stated "He's dead you know". When we enquired who she was talking about it, became apparent she was getting involved in our earlier conversation and had finally decided to impart this information to us. That was Liz down to a tee, she would have been the first to admit that she was not the quickest of people but boy, what a memory.
As an employee, Liz was a managers dream; reliable, efficient and always content, regardless of any mayhem occurring around her. As a person, her character and cheerful disposition will be sadly missed by all who worked with her.
