It was 1.30 on a Thursday afternoon in February and
Dial-a-Cab Board member Tom Whitbread was in Woodford Synagogue
in the rather inaptly named road of Churchfields. |
Catholic Tom...

"I’ve heard most of the questions
before," said Tom, "but on this occasion I was rather
taken aback when one lady asked me whether I had any trouble
getting the job with the Queen Mother, due to my being Jewish? I
didn’t want to cause offence, but my answer just came straight
out: Madam, I said, I’m sorry but I am not Jewish, I’m a Roman
Catholic and proud of it. When I walked in today through that
large wooden door, all my little bits and pieces were intact and
when I walk out they will still be intact and leaving with me!"
Fortunately, the audience roared with laughter! One of the stories that make Tom so popular at these talks occurred whilst he was working for the Queen Mum and awaiting her arrival in the hallway of Clarence House. "I was standing with her staff of butlers, footmen and other household employees. It was then that I realised that I had never seen so many ‘queens’ in one house." |
Although Tom receives no pay for his
talks, he admitted to Call Sign that he really
enjoyed giving them. "It makes a change from dealing with
Complaints," he said smiling!
