Computer Chinchat from Vince Chin sometimes about the pathetic
customer service we receive on the web. But recently, a DaC driver emailed me about his own website as it was somewhat related to my website, so I had to visit and feature it here in my column.
Well, www.policehistory.co.uk is a great site, especially if you’re searching your family tree and you think one of your ancestors was a Police Officer. It provides a searchable database returning orders regards police officers going back to the Victorian era, I even found a Chin in the database, however there wasn’t much about him.
I recommend a visit to www.policehistory.co.uk, as it’s a great site with loads of police related historical information. If you have a site you’d like me to look at and feature, let me know about it on chinvb@netxposure.co.uk or via callsignmag@aol.com. I can’t promise to rave over it unless it’s good though…

Tracking down someone
Finally, have you ever wanted to track someone down in the UK? There’s another excellent free website that’s sourced from the Electoral Role located at http://www.b4u.co.uk.

Simply type in their surname and possible county that they live in and it will do its best to return their address - that’s as long as they’re on the Electoral Role.

Happy New Year
Vince Chin

Usually in my articles I recommend online retailers only when I’ve purchased from them at least a couple of times, have found them to deliver promptly and provide good quality products. Twice I can remember recommending companies and then experiencing problems when I’ve had issues with an item I’d purchased from them. The last two companies were Dabs and Insight, now there’s now a third - Watford Electronics, sometimes known as SavaStore.co.uk.
I’ve recommended Watford a few times as they delivered promptly, products were good quality and relatively cheap. But on 15 October 2005, I purchased another large hard drive and external case for the hard drive, as the scanning of my negatives requires extra hard disk space, however the external case was DoD - Dead On Arrival! I informed cs@watford.co.uk of the DoD item on the day it arrived, but it took almost six weeks for them to provide an RMA to return the item.
I’m usually a patient person, but Watford really tried their hardest to
irritate me, in fact I wouldn’t be
surprised if their policy was to irritate customers who wished to return items!  Try finding a telephone number to call - you won’t! I had to call Sales who gave me a number that contained a recorded message saying the service was unmanned, so I called Sales again who only wanted to give me the same number and wouldn’t let me talk to their manager.
So to resolve the issue, I sent a final email to cs@watford.co.uk  giving them seven days to provide an RMA otherwise I’d be taking legal action against them and reporting them to Which magazine. Six days later I received an email apologising, and finally another week later I received the RMA. So, Watford
Electronics, www.watford.co.uk, will join the list of companies that I will never, ever buy from again and I suggest you do likewise.

DaC driver’s website
I often wonder how many Call Sign readers do read my column considering how much I moan on

In a world where technology moves at an astounding pace, DaC Network Administrator Jonathen Winterburn takes an occasional look at the latest gadgets…

JON ASKS WHAT’S NEW?

John

In recent issues, Jonathen has looked at a 200inch TV set and a laser-guided snooker cue that makes it almost impossible to miss that red ball! But has he now gone a bit loopy? He says he is looking at a mobile phone… for dogs!

Lost your dog? Well, as of next March, pet owners will be able to drop the photocopier and staple gun and pick up the phone instead. That's when PetCell, the first cell phone for dogs, is due to hit pet-store shelves.
Hung around Rover's collar, PetCell is a bone-shaped mobilephone that will let dog

owners talk to their best friend over a two-way speaker!
The PetCell supports GPS and A-GPS (assisted GPS) that locates and tracks your dog, relieving you from the stress of keeping an eye onthe hyperactive pooch each time both of you go out for a walk and  your eyes are focussed on different things!

As you’d expect, the idea comes from the other side of the pond, but Call Sign has been assured that PetCell will retail in the UK as well.
For your info, the USA has 65 million dogs and 77 million cats with their 2004 pet-related expenditures exceeding $34 billion. In addition, 83% of US pet owners over there refer to themselves as Mommy or Daddy when interacting with their pets, while over 31million US dog owners purchase Christmas gifts for their dogs. And now we can phone them anywhere! Who’d be a human…?
