CALL SIGN VISITS THE MAD HATTERS TEA PARTY! |
|
The London
Taxidriver’s Fund for underprivileged Children has been
organising charity events for kids since 1928 and never ceases
to amaze with the quality of those organising abilities. The
2006 Mad Hatters Tea Party – the biggest regular children’s
party in the world – was no exception with every one of the 650
kids having a whale of a time. The kids were ferried in from all parts of London along with their parents or carers on Sunday 22 January to the Party’s usual 5-star comfort of the Grosvenor House Hotel, Great Room, with many looking on in awe at the size of the event they were attending. How do the Fund organise such a huge event? Most of the current committee have been together for years and as Gerry Dunn (S84), the LTFUC Treasurer told Call Sign: "We’ve been doing it so long, that the party almost runs itself. Mind you, the build up to the actual day is hard work!" The Fund’s Chairman, David Lessman (D19), agreed and told us with a sense of pride: "Look at those kids enjoying themselves, that makes all the hard work worthwhile." The kids tucked into plates of sandwiches and mouth-watering desserts while watching the entertainment. Elvis Shmelvis was on stage with an almost perfect rendition of Viva Las Vegas, the Ascension Eagle Cheerleaders did their dance and of course the brilliant Bournemouth Carnival Band with their Batman outfits and great musical skills were there. There was an amazing laser show and dancers from TV’s Strictly Come Dancing, but topping the bill for their fourth year at the Party were The Cheeky girls. The amazing Transylvanian twins, Monica and Gabriella, did a 30-minute set getting a huge pop from the kids – including the parents! Their live singing was excellent and they looked better than ever - having put on a few ounces here and there! That led to the Dave Davis disco and last but not least, a visit to the Grotto room where every child came away with a bag of goodies. DaC Chairman Brian Rice said it all: "It was a brilliant afternoon, but then again, it always is…" |
