The March issue of Call sign asked for volunteers who would like to be involved in a test on a pendant worn around the neck and which seems to relieve stress and with it, tiredness. Surprisingly, we were inundated with volunteers and had to turn some offers down.
The company marketing QLink are currently testing the product and were looking for a group of taxi drivers whose work involved computers and our terminals put us into that group.
QLink MD, Charles Clarke, who is based in Devon came down to Brunswick House to do the tests. We used 15 drivers and 10 staff members whose work involves being on a PC for much of the day. Explaining it very simply, Mr Clarke told Call Sign that brain cells, which communicate with each other electronically, can become scrambled by constant electro-magnetic waves that are bombarding us. They can come from your taxi terminal, home PC, television, the Cabvision set behind you or even from making that mobile phone call! Even your electric toaster could have an adverse effect. These rays have not been proved to be dangerous, but the effect they have on you can be extremely irritating. Tiredness, forgetfulness, aches and pains etc.
Back to QLink. It has been tested out on Olympic standard athletes and world-class golfers such as Ernie Els and Tiger Woods, so much so that many golfers on the tour now wear a QLink constantly. The claim is that the pendant fights the effects of these outside forces by reinforcing our own brainwaves, with the result that they help you sleep and concentrate better. In addition, ex- England rugby player and now BBC TV presenter, Jeremy Guscott, says that the QLink made him feel much healthier and less tired.
But those tests were nothing to do with Dial-a-Cab. We wanted to test QLink for ourselves to see if there was anything in it and it has to be said that some of the results were amazing – none more so than the Editor himself, Alan Fisher, whose lower back pain that he has suffered with for years has eased to the point where he can get out of bed and go straight into the shower.
"For years, I have had to hang around for an hour or so before jumping in," said Alan, "now whilst it doesn’t feel 100%, it feels 100% better than it did before the

test and I can go in without any problem at all."
The question is what does that have to do with stress. According to Charles Clarke, many suffer with lower back pain and assume it to be muscular, but quite often it is stress related."
Call Sign spoke to several other volunteers.
   Caroline McGowan
from DaC’s Account Managers department told this magazine that she feels much calmer since wearing QLink and so did some of the other girls on the test.
DaC driver Bill Kibble (G86) told us that he started by having some headaches (caused by detoxing and worse in some that others). He told us that he now wakes up feeling wonderful and in fact started singing in the shower recently! "I now wake up with that hullo world – let’s go feeling!"
   Tony Bardin (R09)
said that his results had been "fantastic." Since using it, I have never felt so wide awake," he told us, "so much so that my wife took it from me to try out and she had the same results, whereas I went back to how I had been before! She is now going to buy her own one. It really is amazing and when the test has been completed, I will definitely be buying one. Another benefit is where I used to have a quick 30-minute doze in the cab, but now no longer need one. I thought it might have been psychological, but now I believe it really works. Just don’t ask me how!"
   Chris Barrett (L17)
had a cold before and still had it when we spoke to him one week later. But although nothing miraculous had occurred, he told us that while he had always been a good sleeper, his sleep now was even better. "I awake at 4am and can’t believe how awake I am now. I also feel really sharp when in the cab and no longer tired."
Call Sign’s regular poet, David Kupler (Y74), who practices relaxation techniques at home and whose stress levels were low anyway, felt no different. "Mind you", he said, "I had a job to Reading the day after putting on the QLink!"
   Next we asked Mickey
Osborne (Y78) who told us that nothing much had happened although he felt less tired and less stressed. "It has taken away my feeling of fatigue," he said.
   John Carter
, one of the non-radio volunteers we decided to use as he was unaffected by a data terminal, told us that he had always woken up like a bear with a sore head! The day after putting on the QLink, his wife was concerned when he woke up in such a pleasant mood. "Neither of us could believe it," he said!
The other non-radio driver that Call Sign contacted was Clyde Miller. He couldn’t believe how wide-awake he now felt since wearing the QLink. "It’s like having 5 cups of coffee swirling around inside you. You’re just buzzing through the day..."
Finally, we spoke to Alec Wilkey (W83) who together with his partner Pat O’Toole (T44) introduced Charles Clarke to DaC. He says that it is the best thing that has ever happed to him. He used to feel exhausted at the end of the day and now says he feels like a new man!
As a bonus, Alex’ knees are worn out from his time at working in the meat markets and also from boxing. He has suffered with pain for years, but since wearing the QLink his knees are no better – they can’t repair the damage done – but the pain has almost gone. "Because of that," Alec told us, "you’d never know that my knees were anything other than perfect!"
What is the answer? Can it all be coincidence? Call Sign will do a follow up next month…
We have had several drivers who are keen to purchase the QLink. As testers, we get the QLink at cost price. Phone 01732 744 033 and quote the ‘Dial a Cab’ offer. All work identically (except the "Classic" which contains slightly older technology), the extra cost is for looks and those who want to show the pendant off…
