Drivers were left feeling shocked last month when popular Dial-a-Cab driver Ted Foot (R80), aged just 60, died in hospital following an aneurism. His wife Jackie told Call Sign that they had recently returned from a Baltic cruise to St Petersburg and had both come back with coughs.
"Mine soon cleared up," Jackie said, "but Ted’s wouldn’t go and he was taken into hospital and put onto a course of antibiotics. He always looked so healthy and I just couldn’t believe it when he suddenly died. Then I heard that his death had been caused by an aneurism rather than from the infection they were treating him for. I had spoken to him on the phone just an hour earlier."
Fighting back tears, Jackie told us that Ted had started to cut back his hours and was delighted to be getting his Freedom Pass...
"We had a lovely life together and were going to go all over the place and looking forward to it so much. Then there was our garden that we enjoyed working on so much. We met when I was 16 and even after all our years together,

we still loved each other very
much. I think that we were so lucky because some people may never have what we had together."
Ted had been driving a taxi for 39 years, although he had a break after 9 years when he went back to his original occupation of banking, but later came back to driving his cab. He usually started work at around 11am and stopped for lunch in Charterhouse Street, meeting up with the same regular drivers each day at what became known as the 2-o’clock luncheon club. Many of those that Ted ate with attended his funeral.
"It really was so nice and respectful of them to do that," said Jackie, "Ted would have been so pleased to know they were there. He would probably have joked with them because he had such a wonderful sense of humour."
Besides wife Jackie, Ted leaves two sons, Edward and James. Edward and wife Catherine have Ted and Jackie’s two grandchildren, Rosie and William.
The sincere condolences of everyone at DaC go to Jackie and her family…
