Showing Your Licence
Many drivers would have received a letter from me asking them to
show a copy of their cab licence. The reason for this is to
ensure all members conform to the rulebook and own their own
vehicle. Our only method of checking is to see the cab licence
issued by the Carriage Office. As of now, only a third of the
fleet have been written to and your response has been very good,
for which I thank you for getting back to us so quickly.
This task has shown up a couple of anomalies with certain
individuals, which have now been rectified.
I’m aware that in previous years, showing your cab licence after
every overhaul has not been enforced and the reason for this is
primarily because it would have been a full-time job for more
than one member of staff to regularly check manual records each
day.
We have now developed new computer software to produce a daily
report of those members who have not shown us their cab licence
up to fourteen days after being given the plates by the PCO.
We can automatically print a reminder letter, post it out and
eventually keep the Society records up to date. In the event
that a driver does fail to show us the cab licence or a copy, we
can then carry out further investigations to make sure the
driver is a bona fide member.
In future, all members will be required to send us or come into
Driver Services to show us the new cab licence. Remember, this
is a requirement of the Society’s rules and anyone found to be
in |

breach of those rules will have
to face the consequences. I know some drivers dislike this
heavy-handed type of threat, but I am only pointing out that
this is an extremely important issue which all members must
adhere to for the future.
New Cabot Square
Ranking
Hopefully by the time you receive this issue of Call Sign, you
will have read the information sheet regarding the new ranks in
Cabot Square. This is a reminder that the position of the new
E14S rank is opposite number 25 Upper Bank Street and
facing eastwards.
From 21:00 hours, E140 rank will be a physical rank
positioned in the centre of the road in Bank Street opposite
buildings 30 and 40.
During the hours of 06:00 to 21:00 both E14C and E14S will operate
as all of our ranks do, except for the fact that if a trip is
offered to the rank and there is no driver on it or it is
rejected by all the cabs, it will
|
automatically be offered
to the other rank before it goes to the primary zone. In other
words E14C will first go to E14S and E14S will first go to E14C.
To meet with requests we have had from many drivers who work the island
late, E140 has been set to open from 21:00 hours. This will be a
physical rank as I have said and positioned in the centre of the
road in Bank Street facing east. All the work will be offered to
this rank and if not covered, will then go into the primary zone
of E14 then go through the back up zones before ending up in
BIDS.
Those who wish to wait on
the new E140 rank will be able to reject and see the
destinations of those accounts who do not have their
destinations masked. Those drivers on a going-home facility will
not be offered any trip from the rank. You will have to wait
till the trips either go to the primary or back up zones.
Hopefully drivers will service the rank with the spirit that it has
been set up with and that is similar to way we operated the
Moorgate rank many years ago - first cab takes the first job
even though you could reject it if you wanted to.
A marshal will be in attendance for the first few weeks to
ensure that drivers book in correctly at 21:00 hours. If two or
more arrive at the same time, then the cab following must wait
till the cab in front books in and put his/her flashers on.
