There are those who believe mildly in superstition and some whose lives are based on it, while a third group would deliberately walk under a ladder to prove that all superstition is rubbish. Most wouldn’t think too long about flying on Friday 13, but given the choice of the 14th and 15th, how many would still choose the 13th?
The Dial-a-Cab drivers who accepted ‘As Directed’ jobs at Gatwick Airport on Friday 13 May had probably not even given the date a passing thought, however, some of the 1000 passengers who had just been flown home from Portugal a week before the scheduled end of their Thomson holiday cruise might have disagreed.
They had all been on the maiden voyage of the Thomson Celebration cruise liner which had left Southampton one week earlier, but due to plumbing problems the toilets didn’t work properly and…well you wouldn’t want to know the rest!
One passenger told Call Sign:    “My cabin wasn’t too bad, perhaps because I was travelling alone. Some family cabins were having terrible problems using the loos. There  were plumbers on board working flat out, but they obviously couldn’t correct the problem. Once it became apparent that the cruise would have to be curtailed, Thomson were wonderful. We were all

offered a free replacement holiday later in the year and flown back to either Bournemouth or Gatwick where cabs were laid on to take us home. I feel so sorry for Thomson because it was a really lovely ship – and I should know as it was my 30th cruise.”

A Dial-a-Cab Marshal was quickly called to Gatwick and started marrying up passengers for this ‘T’ attribute account. Drivers who were expecting trips to London might have been disappointed with the shortest trip going out to Basingstoke! Two drivers went to Newcastle and two to Wales, there were jobs to Leeds, Halifax, Worcester, Manchester, all over the Midlands, across the water to the Isle of Wight with no anti-sea sick pills available and oh yes, there was a
trip to Whetstone!
One driver told Call Sign: “Considering what these people had been through, you couldn’t help but admire the stiff British upper lip spirit that they all showed. Perhaps they were joined together in
adversity, but few were moaning considering their holidays had just been halved.  When we were asked which way we wanted to go and then given a list of choices, it sounded a bit like Christmas had come early! But sympathy for the passenger’s plights helped calm things down. You have to admire Thomson who considering the money it must have cost them, behaved impeccably.”

The driver added as an afterthought: “ This ‘T’ attribute isn’t too bad either!”

BRIAN RICE CELEBRATES THIRTIETH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY

Dial-a-Cab Chairman Brian Rice and his wife Brenda recently celebrated their thirtieth wedding anniversary by taking a cruise with their family to the Norwegian Fiords.
Brenda first met Brian at Tiffany’s in Wimbledon and remembers that he always had an audience of women around him hanging on to his every word. She said to her friend at the time: “Don’t talk to that flash blonde Adonis over there, he really fancies himself!” But she gradually fell under his spell and hasn’t looked back since.
And Brian’s view? “I can understand the blonde Adonis reference… but flash? Me? Never…!”

Brenda’s wedding bouquet consisted of yellow roses and every anniversary since, Brian has bought Brenda a number of yellow roses to match the number of years.
“It wasn’t too bad in the early years,”
said Brian, “but it’s costing me a fortune nowadays! Had I known we would still be together all these years later, I’d have made the original bouquet in daffodils!”

And what’s the secret of such a long and happy marriage?
“I think I’d agree with the couple who
recently entered the Guinness Book of

Records after celebrating their 80th anniversary. Although, sadly, he has since died, his two-word answer to that question will live on. Whatever your wife says, just reply: “Yes dear…!”
