Dial-a-Cab Chairman’s wife Brenda Rice always enters competitions on the various television networks if she happens to be at home. With daytime viewers no longer satisfied winning a bag of knitting wool and a years supply of crisps, prizes have shot up in recent years and many programmes such as Richard and Judy, Paul O’Grady and GMTV now give away thousands of pounds in prizes.
Another program that dishes the dosh is the very popular lunchtime show starring Des O’Connor and Melanie Sykes, Today with Des and Mel. The two stars keep the show ticking along with a variety of top class guests, some music, non-stop banter between them and of course, those competitions.  "They run two competitions daily," Brenda told Call Sign, "Spin the Wheel, where competitors answer a question   for money and then on the spin of a huge roulette wheel see whether they can treble the original prize, and the competition I went in for. In this one, Des and Mel show

Brenda entered the competition and forgot about it as the day went on. She went out shopping and came back mid-afternoon just in time to hear the phone  ringing. It was the Des and Mel Show asking if she had entered a competition. They then told her that   she was fourth in line to be a winner, winners having to be at home when the official phone call comes later.

"The first three must have stayed out later than me," said a delighted Brenda, "because they phoned again later to tell me that I was now the winner of £2000 and as December was only a day away, what a great time to do it!"

So how will Brenda spend her sudden windfall and will she ask Brian for some help?
I might manage on my own," she said through a broad smile,
How about Des’s new CD? ‘A Tribute To The Crooners’ features new recordings of songs made famous by Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Nat King Cole, Perry Como and Dean Martin.
