Brian Rice presents that trophy to Microsoft's Dick Cullard With over twenty highly qualified golf foursomes entered into Dial-a-Cab’s 2005 Charity Golf tournament, Sundridge Park on 13 July was set to be a hot-bed of the finer arts of the small ball game. Organised by Keith Cain, there was never going to be any problem with the weather this year other than would it be too hot! As the players munched on the buffet breakfast, the outside temperature was already nudging 80 degrees and still climbing. Many of our large corporate clients had sent experienced teams along, while some were obviously going to be there to make up the numbers. One such team was that representing Call Sign Magazine! Played together before? ![]() Allan Evans ready to break par! Call Sign’s team had never even met until arriving at the course! The four were selected after Call Sign put out a terminal message asking for four volunteers to represent this magazine. We hoped to get four, but were amazed to get so many that we had to issue an apology to all those who couldn’t get through after we became inundated with calls! Our four golfers were Ray Scott (T34), Lew Shurlin (R13), Eugene Smith (E90) and Jim Crawford (M18) and to quote someone on the day: A mule had more chance of winning the Grand National than our foursome had of winning the tournament! Call Sign appointed Lew Shurlin as our team captain for the very good tactical reason that he was the only one we knew! told us that it had been a wonderful day of golf. During the prize presentations – most of which seemed to go to the Call Sign team – DaC Chairman Brian Rice was heard to say: “*&^%* hell! Alan Fisher will never let us live this down!” And indeed he won’t! So for once we can say – well done Call Sign!
