Dial-a-Cab
driver Alex Constantinou (N05) has had his
name on a "film extras" agency books for
several months, but was slightly unprepared for the
text message asking if he could be at Pinewood
studios 5.30 the following Saturday morning to
appear as an extra in the remake of the 1971 smash
hit movie, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. "I said yes straightaway," Alex told Call Sign! "Pinewood was just amazing and you’d never believe just how long it took to take my scene. I was dressed as a factory worker with a boiler suit and the Wonka name emblazoned on it and by the time the scene was wrapped up, I felt as though these were my own clothes! It took all day to shoot, in fact Roald Dahl probably took less time to write the book!" For those who don’t know the story, it’s about a poor young boy who goes on a tour to the most magnificent chocolate factory in the world guided by its mysterious operator. The original film was very light-hearted but the new movie promises to treat the subject more seriously. According to director Tim Burton, the original film was ‘sappy’. "It's sappy when it shouldn't be sappy and it's weird. Let's just say it's not one of my personal favourites, but I’ve wanted to do Willy Wonka for |
![]() years. I responded to Roald Dahl's
book (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) because it
respected that children can be adults and I think
adults forget that. There can be darkness and a sort
of foreboding. Sinister things are very much a part
of childhood. I like that sort of humour and emotion
put together." |
