Following
rather adverse comments in the September Editorial
regarding cyclists and the anti-cyclist letters that
appeared in the following issue, Call Sign sent a
reporter out onto the streets of the capital to
gauge DaC driver’s views at random on the subject.
Several made unrepeatable comments for a family mag,
while others offered advice to cyclists that we
think might be physically impossible! However, a
handful of our more articulate members were prepared
to consider both sides of the divide…![]() Alfred Cook (A62) Alfred Cook (A62): "It would be helpful if cyclists obeyed the traffic laws. They usually whizz up one-way-streets the wrong way and ignore traffic lights, or go up onto the pavement to avoid obstacles and then return to the street without looking while causing all sorts of problems. They overtake on the inside while cabs and cars are turning left and then blame the driver! They should also have some form of registration and insurance so they can be traced and called to account for their actions, just like other road users."
Phil Jacobs (D13): "I think the majority of cyclists are ok, but they should stay on the pavement. As road users, they seem to want everything their own way. They should have some form of registration details by law." |

![]() David Nicho (K60)David Nicho (K60): "Is this a family mag? Ok, well, they’re a nuisance! They should all have to take some form of proficiency test and be licensed to use the streets like other road users. They ought to have insurance cover as well! You did say it’s a family mag didn’t you?"
Chris Oliver (T64): "Some cyclists are good, responsible road users and environmentally friendly too. But some of the ‘jobbing’ pedallers – couriers and the like - are totally irresponsible. I’m not keen on cycle lanes either, a waste of money and road space." |
![]() Malcolm Lisgarten (W10) Malcolm Lisgarten (W10): "Oh, cyclists eh? Well, they don’t obey traffic laws like the rest of us and regularly break the rules of the road. They jump traffic lights, endangering life and limb and continue over zebra crossings when people are on the roadway. They come up one-way-streets the wrong way because it suits them and wobble along in bus lanes, meaning everything else gets stuck behind ‘em. And did I mention zebra crossings…?"Love ‘em or loath ‘em, the fact is that cycles are here to stay. They are environmentally friendly and can be a healthy form of exercise. When used responsibly, they can also be a convenient form of transport over short journeys. But the operative word seems to be ‘responsibly’… © Call Sign Magazine MM4 |
