Ex-DaC driver Bob Woodford writes a regular column for Call Sign from his new home at Languedoc in France…

Being surrounded by vineyards is probably the reason why there is always a bottle of wine on the table each evening for dinner. Our local wine merchant provides an excellent organic white, red or rose for just 1 euro (70p) per litre! A container is provided at Monsieur Dupont’s wine celler, which you bring back each time for a refill in your 3 or 5 litre ‘take away’.
The trouble is that this stuff, though not exactly vintage, is far too easy to drink. Indeed, many a mistake has occurred on my laptop late in the evening!
On one occasion, I was conducting a bit of research into ‘Property Care’ here in the south of France, knowing it was already a viable business plan. I decided to email a company called ‘Flying Visits’ based in Gironde - further to the north - with a ‘spoof’ letter in order to glean some valuable information.
Sure enough, they came back with an email containing all the details of their services, costs, etc. But, despite all the

‘plus-points’ of their enterprise, Sue Atkinson seemed proud of the fact to declare ‘I’m afraid we do not work in the months of July and August, it is far too hot for us!’
Well, I was shocked! I decided immediately to email my business partner Charles, with the news that this bunch of lazy lizards do not work in the key summer months. Yep, you guessed it, I thought that I’d emailed Charlie, but oh dear, the effect of the vin rouge caused me to send the ‘lazy lizard’ jibe back to Sue!
You should have seen the email that followed: "We might be lazy, but we certainly do not have lizard features!" End of research! I apologised unreservedly, suggesting that we send my faux pas to the editor of ‘French Property News’ so we could both benefit from the

publicity. I’m afraid Sue did not see the funny side of it.
So, the golden rule now is no more than 3 glasses of wine each evening if I intend to work on the computer!
Incidentally, one of the features of all the vineyards down here is that visitors are free to enjoy wine-tasting, or ‘degustation’ under no obligation to purchase, indeed, on my weekly guided tours, this is all included in the trip!

M&O NEW WEBSITE NOW LIVE

The new enhanced website of Mann & Overton is now live www.mannandoverton.com . It features the new refreshed LTI logo inspired by the Taxi ‘for hire’ sign and follows the launch of the new LTI Vehicles website at www.lti.co.uk last year.
The website is an evolution from the previous versions with the web designers seeking to ensure that it is easier to navigate, while containing more in-depth information. It is aimed to be a true one-stop shop for anyone working as a purpose built taxi driver - be they looking to buy or sell, arrange a test drive or even book a service.
Investor information can be found on the website of M&O’s parent company, Manganese Bronze Holdings plc at www.manganese.com .
There is a section for each of M&O’s operations in London, Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester - between them covering the north of the country - allowing visitors to configure and price a new TXII, request a copy of the latest brochure, book a test drive, browse a listing of used cabs or request that service booking.
M&O Director, John Blight, told Call Sign:
"Nowadays company websites are very often the first source of information anyone turns to when they need to find out about a company. They are a company’s shop window to the outside world. We have aimed to provide a website which is not just attractive and easy to navigate, but which provides all the information that drivers, or anyone with an interest in the taxi trade, could need."
