The Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Sir John Stevens, has officially launched the new ‘One Number’ taxi booking service which gives Londoners access to 7,000 Licensed Taxis on the one number - 0871 871 8710. Dial-a-Cab and the five other London taxi radio circuits have united to support the new 24 hours a day service for passengers paying by cash or credit/debit card.
Sir John told Call Sign:
"London is winning the war against unlicensed and illegal minicab touts thanks to the ongoing Metropolitan Police crackdown which led to over 600 arrests just last year alone.  ‘One Number’ will play a crucial part in providing safe and reliable journeys in licensed black taxis and I hope it will become a landmark service for London."
One Number is also supported by Mayor Ken Livingstone and Transport for London as part of the safety
campaign to win the war

against minicab touts - a
proportion of whom were responsible for committing 120 sexual assaults on women last year of which 36 were rapes.
Ken Livingstone told Call Sign:
"This is another step forward for safe travel and I congratulate the taxi trade on working together to achieve One Number. Londoners now
have the option of booking a
black cab without having to hail
it from the street. I’m sure it
will be particularly welcomed by women seeking safe, reliable transport to complete their journey from the train, tube or bus station."

It is estimated that over 500,000 One Number business cards will be handed out over the coming months as a handy reminder for passengers. The card also informs them about the £2 additional charge. A large supply of the new cards are available from Brunswick House.

The day started with drivers going to the school in Boundary Road named after DaC’s former Chairman, Jack Taylor and to the Woodfield School in Kingsbury. Around forty taxis at each school picked up children. Added to police, St Johns Ambulance, RAC and Norwich Union Rescue, we ended up with two medium-sized convoys for the journey to the M1 and as luck would have it, the two convoys met up at the start of the motorway making it some sight with all taxis having the same bright yellow Sponsors and Fund posters on.

LTFUC TAXI SAFARI TO WOBURN

arrival at the Safari Park everyone
was given a bottle of water in addition to a guidebook. Every
child was also given a clipboard, pen and questionnaire about the animals - adding an educational as well as fun factor! Ros McGill from LTI vehicles was also on
hand to give each driver a £10 fuel voucher, as were Tony, Amanda and Sally from Westminster Insurance who gave each driver a goodie bag which among other things, included a £50 discount voucher! DaC’s Bill Tyzack (C06), the Fund’s Life President was kept busy accepting cheques on behalf of the Fund!
Then it was off round the Safari Park to view the elephants, lions, bears rhinos, camels, zebras and others followed by lunch at the Safari Lodge Restaurant. After eating, everyone was free to explore the rest of this amazing Safari Park.
After a 4-30 picnic tea in the amphitheatre, it was back to the
taxis for the journey home and the end of a great day out. All I can say is that Woburn is well worth a visit…
Through Call Sign, I would like to thank Westminster Motor Insurance and Bartle Bogle Hegarty for sponsoring the outing, LTI Vehicles for sponsoring the fuel and all from the Duke of Bedford’s estate at the Safari Park for their help and hospitality. Thanks also to St Johns Ambulance, RAC, Norwich Union Rescue, PC’s Gary Wilkins and Steve Adams of the City of London Police, the BP service station in Clipstone Street and last but by no means least, you the drivers. Without you and the above companies, the Fund could not run these outings. So on behalf of the children and the fund… thanks a million for a great day out!
