FROM SAN FRANCISCO TO THE WINDY CITY – |
Having seen the TXII take San
Francisco by storm, the famous London Taxi has now headed east
and is about to invade Chicago. The vehicle, according to the
Chicago press, resembles a "curvaceously stocky station wagon,"
but makers LTI won’t care if they call it a Martian space ship
if the vehicle sells! Yellow Cab is awaiting the city's approval to begin assimilating the London-style taxis into their fleet, but there are already some around town. Marshall Field's State Street store has been using one of the taxis since September to deliver to those customers living locally, while according to Fitzpatrick Chicago hotel spokesman Tom Coffey, as of October 15 the hotel began a complimentary shuttle service using a TXII to ferry their guests around town. The hotel paid $45000 for the taxi and American Express helped allay the cost by having their name plastered all over the taxi. Chicago cab driver Marc Lacum, who saw the cab at the hotel, told Call Sign that it looked so much nicer than his regular cab, a Ford Crown Victoria. "Mind you," said Marc, "it’s much more expensive, but it does leave my cab behind for looks and facilities." However, the TXII has come up against one problem. According to Connie Buscemi, spokeswoman for Chicago's Consumer Services Department, the city's only real concern lies with the safety of the wheelchair ramps. "However," said Ms Buscemi, "the city will work as fast as possible to clear up that issue and get the TXII onto the road as a cab rather than a tourist attraction." Call Sign can only wonder what Al Capone would have made of the TXII…! |
