In mid-October, Dial-a-Cab dispatcher Richard Ross was crossing the road after buying a newspaper and committed the cardinal sin of reading it while crossing back over. The next thing Richard remembers is going up in the air after being hit by a vehicle and vaguely hearing the air ambulance landing in Queensbridge Road to rush him to the Royal London.

When he finally came round, all he could see were his ankles twisted and mangled and with blood spurting out of them. The pain was unbearable and he passed out again, just remembering seeing my mum’s face looking down at him.
Richard arrived at the hospital to find seven doctors waiting for him. After examining Richard, they told him that they couldn’t guarantee that they could save his feet and might be forced in amputating one or even both. Only after coming out of the

anaesthetic and seeing both feet in plaster, did Richard know that he still had his legs. "The thought of losing them was just horrifying," Richard told Call Sign from his hospital bed which had by then changed to the Homerton.
Richard had two metal pins inserted into his ankles followed by skin grafts from his thigh to recover his ankles and was in a wheelchair for two months. He still limps quite badly, but told us that he much preferred that to the other option of amputation!
Then finally, in January, Richard came back to work at Dial-a-Cab. He asked Call Sign to pass on the following message:
"Being back at Brunswick House is just brilliant. I’d like to thank all the drivers and staff who sent words of encouragement and  visited me. But I’d like to send my biggest

thanks to Keith Cain and Karen Gadson. They kept in touch with me constantly and I’d especially like to especially thank Keith for all the encouragement and for reminding me that my job was safe. I can’t tell you the concern I had before hearing that, but Keith made sure that I wasn’t to worry and that when I was ready, my job would be waiting. I don’t want to embarrass him, but he was a real diamond! Tom Whitbread was also instrumental in sending encouragement. It all meant so much. DaC may be a small company compared to others in the City, but when it comes to looking after their staff, they are at the top."
Richard still may have to undergo more surgery as his knee is still facing the wrong way, but compared to that day in Queensbridge Road, he is feeling wonderful…

PAUL WINS ANNUAL LTI AWARD

Paul Segui of LTI Vehicles’ Maintenance department has won the Gold Award in the company’s 2003 Reward and Recognition Scheme. Each year the Scheme recognises employees who have made an outstanding contribution or commitment to LTI’s success.
Paul’s prize is a ‘Virgin Experience’ day, which will enable him to try his skills at a new activity selected from a wide range including scuba diving, parachute jumping and white water rafting.
During the year, Paul was personally responsible for project managing the relocation of Mann & Overton’s Birmingham outlet to new, larger purpose built premises in the city’s Aston area.  His success in ensuring a smooth transition with minimal disruption to the dealership’s operations, earned him a recommendation through the company’s monthly  nomination scheme.

Peter Shillcock presents Paul with his prize
Paul received his prize from LTI Vehicles Managing Director Peter Shillcock, who explained to Call Sign’s southern readers:
"The relocation of Mann & Overton across the city of Birmingham was a major undertaking due to the amount  of vehicles, machinery and office equipment needing to be transported, while still
maintaining high service standards to our local customers. Thanks to Paul’s efforts, the process ran seamlessly with M&O now well established at their new facility well within the agreed time schedule."
Paul, who has been with LTI for more than 13 years, is married with two children and lives in Coventry.
