(B24) had a shock when he pulled into the BP Service Station in Vauxhall
Bridge Road for some diesel – a garage used by many licensed taxi drivers. Terry told Call Sign: "For some inexplicable reason, as well as green handles for some petrols they now have a petrol pump with a blue handle as well. BP diesel has a black handle. Unfortunately for me and I confess my own fault, I mistook the new blue handle petrol for a diesel pump and filled £26 of petrol into my tank. Those using Esso stations will know that blue is their colour for diesel." With the cost of the fuel, his loss of earnings, a taxi fare home from the garage, his taxi needing to be towed away - all at 1.00am in the morning - |
 The blue BP petrol pump looks quickly like the Esso diesel pump. and the hefty bill from his garage for cleaning out the fuel tank, this little mistake cost Terry around £300. BP in Vauxhall Bridge Road confirmed that Terry was not alone in making this mistake and that a similar incidence occurred in the previous week. Other garages also told Call Sign similar stories. Terry then contacted BP Customer Care and was told that their Marketing Department were happy with the signage. "I'll be giving all BP Service Stations a wide berth from now on. Once bitten, twice shy…" said an unhappy Terry. Call Sign looked at the fuel pump situation and can confirm that Terry’s problem stems from a new fuel that BP have brought onto the market. |
Although around 3p a litre more
expensive than ordinary fuels, Ultimate contains fuel additives that
are proven to benefit both the vehicle and its emissions. Unfortunately, they have used a sky blue pump for the Ultimate petrol and a darker blue for diesel. One spokesperson for Tesco told us that there is no industry standard for fuel pump colours, consequently the mix-ups occur fairly frequently. No doubt they will also occur the other way round with car owners mistakenly putting diesel into their tanks. Sadly, the bottom line is that it is YOUR responsibility to take adequate care when filling up. It does seem a pity though, that with so many colours available for their new petrol BP had to choose one already in use by a competitor for diesel… |
