DaC's Mike Son, Chairman of the London Taxidrivers Fund for
Underprivileged Children, was entitled to the huge grin on his face
following the 2003 Mad Hatters Tea Party at the event's usual magnificent
venue of the Great Room at the Grosvenor House. The event, tying in with the
Fund's 75th anniversary, must surely have classified as the best ever. Six
hundred plus kids and their parents / helpers spent four hours of pure fun,
interspersed only by little hands grabbing at sandwiches / cakes / trifles /
drinks! The entertainment was first class and worthy of Top of the Pops! Black Diamond DJ Dave Davis was, as usual, the man who held it all together introducing guests such as Barbara Windsor, who later went around saying hi to many of the kids who were too young to know her as anyone other than Eastenders Peggy Mitchell. Their most asked question was why she was leaving the soap...? But it was the live acts that grabbed the attention. Supported by the very enjoyable and funny Bournemouth Carnival Spiderman Band, American cheerleaders, a group who performed extracts from Joseph and the Technicolour Dreamcoat and a Chinese Dragon dance, the two top of the bills were sensational captures by the Fund. and the male helpers/dads staring in amazement at the girl's skimpy outfits
- were the Cheeky Girls who performed a live extended version of their
number one chart-topper, Cheeky Girls. The two girl crackers then spent over
two hours signing autographs and posing for photos for a queue that grew and
grew! They turned no one down and for that alone, they deserve continued
success. However, even the Cheeky Girls great performance couldn't command the almost- paranoiac screaming from the (very) young girls in the audience when the announcement was made of the next act - the ten-man boy band that has stormed the charts with 'At The Crossroads' - The Blazin' Crew, who performed three great rap tracks including 'Crossroads'. Their appearance marked the demise of the teenybopper and Call Sign can be the first magazine to announce the appearance of the |
Kiddiebopper! During one track, Mike Son attempted to show them
how a real pro does it. The less said about Mike's singing voice the better
- but it was great fun! During their act, Val Gomez from DaC Driver's Services looked perplexed as she linked arms with other Fund members to stop these young ladies getting their 10 year old hands on their Blazin' Crew idols! There was a special presentation to DaC driver Paul Barber (F60) for all his sterling work with the Fund over the years. But as usual, it was a team effort with the Fund's Committee working non-stop to make sure everything went to plan. Call Sign was also pleasantly surprised to hear that long-time Fund member Malcolm Shaffron has rejoined DaC after leaving around 25 years ago. We obviously don't hold grudges!
